Carrier owner John Kelley is lucky to be alive after suffering a heart attack while at work earlier this month. But he has more to thank for his survival than just luck; he’s alive thanks to his employees and the emergency response training they had received through the company.
Less than two months prior to the incident, the employees at Kelley Trucking had received CPR training as part of a new safety preparedness program instituted by the carrier. So when Kelley himself went down in the middle of a meeting, his employees jumped into action.
According to Kelley’s son, Luke Kelley, everyone knew exactly what to do and nobody panicked.
“You could tell he was, I mean, he was dying,” said Luke in an interview with CBS 4. “Everybody started just falling in place depending on where they were in the room… Within 30 seconds we had an AED and six people that had CPR training within the last two months in the room.”
Using compressions, rescue breaths, and a few shocks from a defibrillator, the staff – including Luke and his mother Dottie – were able to resuscitate Kelley and save his life. It was a frightening experience for everyone involved, but Luke said that as soon as Kelley and his wife started arguing over whether or not he had to go to the hospital, “then you kind of knew they were back and everybody was going to be alright.”
Kelley and his family are encouraging other companies to provide training to their entire staff. Said Kelley, “I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time to where they saved my life.”
