The university sleep study that has been commissioned by the FMCSA to determine the fate of the Hours of Service rules is offering to pay drivers up to $2,166 to take part in their split study.
According to a statement it made last month, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute will need around 250 drivers to take part in their 5 month study. Drivers will be split up into two groups, one that follows the pre-2013 HOS rules, and one that follows the post-2013 rules.
On the study website, it says that to qualify, drivers must currently drive at night, work more than 60 hours a week, make use of the restart provisions, and take one night restarts at least some of the time.
Once selected for the study drivers will need to drive a vehicle equipped with both outward and inward facing cameras, wear a wrist activity monitor, take a health background survey, complete a sleep diary, keep a caffeine log, perform smartphone based assessments, and track their hours using an ELD/EOBR. In return drivers will receive up to $2,166 for participating in the study.

I agree 20 weeks of my privacy etc being impeded on, no thanks. That would be a sum of $108 a week, not worth it to me.

someone really needs to protest this. study, it is biased to drivers with on board recorders, as far as i know there has been no law or rule passed yet requiring evrryone to have them , so to. me doing a study where drivers on paper still have to show 15 minutes for inspection and fuel and so on is not included in the study shows once again fmcsa is manipulating the out come of the results by not including all aspects of drivers and logging options, simply put , PAPER LOGS ARE STILL AN OPTION ,WHY ARE THEY. NOT INCLUDED IN THE STUDY ???

Call your congressman, representative and senator. Let them know. It is a total waste of taxpayer money for VA Tech to do a study to prove the study VA Tech previously did was correct. What do you think the outcome will be? Taxpayers are at about $8,000,000 for these studies now. I am sure VA Tech hopes they need a third one.

I dont like the perimeters being used for the sleep study participants: must work the night shift. VS. work a rotating shift. Myself, i would love to work the night shift regular, (any shift regularly). Working a rotating shift, when i get hit by night shift work , the next 3 days, im still feeling sluggish…its dumb, dumb, dumb.

Various megamills I have been at, even if just for a ‘cup of coffee’, claim they want IBOR’s mandatory “in order to get rid of all the small trucking companies”.
