This truck driver is being hailed as a hero after he singlehandedly pulled a grandmother out of a wreck just moments before her vehicle caught fire.
Georgia resident Greg Moore was driving west on Highway 100 outside of Keystone Heights, Florida, when he witnessed a single-vehicle accident. A pickup truck had taken a curve too quickly, left the road, and collided with a tree.
“I (saw) a vehicle come around the curve, and I still just looked like, ‘Did this really just happen in front of me?'” Moore said in an interview with Action News JAX.
The 16-year trucking veteran pulled over and climbed out of his vehicle to help. He was making his way over to the pickup when he saw smoke and fire coming from underneath the vehicle.
When he made it over, he found 74-year-old Annie Lee Smith pinned inside the truck.
“As I get over there she said, ‘My foot is stuck,’ and I looked down (and) her foot was up beneath the brake pedal,” Moore said.
As Moore struggled to free her, the smoke and flames intensified and her foot was swelling and turning black. Finally, Moore was able to get her out of the pickup and to a safe distance where they watched the vehicle go up in flames.
Moore then waited with her until help arrived and called her son to let him know what happened.
For stepping in and helping a stranger in need, the Truckload Carriers Association has named Moore a Highway Angel, presenting him with a certificate, patch, lapel pin, and decals for his truck.
