As many as 20 highway shootings have occurred over the past month in and around the Kansas City area. Authorities are unsure which shootings may be connected, but it appears that the spree started on March 8th and continued, increasing in frequency over the next month.
The story has been picked up by national news outlets, some claiming that there have been 13 confirmed incidents, while others say that an additional 7 shootings were added to the list after detectives reviewed them for similarities. Police say that they expect the number of shootings to change as they rule out some incidents and investigate others.
Though there is no suspect as of yet, and law enforcement isn’t sharing much information, it seems that at least one shooter is operating in and around the Kansas City area, firing a handgun at vehicles driving on highways. Most of the shootings appear to have taken place near on and off ramps where a shooter would be able to quickly drive in the opposite direction of his victim. Police say it is also a possibility that the shooter or shooters are on foot.
Despite the number of shootings, only three people have received gunshot wounds, none of which are considered life-threatening.
Kansas City Police Chief Darryl Forté contacted the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for help as soon as his department realized that the shootings were connected. The ATF has sent specially trained canine units to seek out shell casings and other evidence at several of the crime scenes.
No new shootings have been reported since Sunday, but police are asking for drivers to stay vigilant and report and suspicious activity. A $7,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to an arrest in the case, but until then, many motorists are keeping off of the highways in the area.
“It’s unaimed, not targeted,” motorist Ashley Quinn told KCTV, a CNN affiliate in the Kansas City area. “You don’t know who they are shooting at. It could be anybody.”

For those who think carrying a concealed weapon might help…. If some whack job is sitting on the side of the road shooting randomly at cars and trucks, are you saying that if you are carrying a concealed weapon, he’s going to skip shooting at your truck? Just asking
