Attention truckers! The annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Brake Safety Week inspection blitz will be held from Sunday, September 11th, through Saturday, September 18th.
Every year the enforcement agencies come out in full force for the CVSA’s multi-national inspection blitz. Vehicles will be receiving inspections with a special emphasis on everything having to do with brakes including alignment, braking systems, and all manner of brake-related violations.
Each inspection will likely be different, but in most locations, it will be far more involved than a quick peek at the brakes to make sure everything’s there. According to the CVSA’s website, many inspectors will be conducting Level I Inspections and using performance-based brake testing equipment including a slow speed roller dynamometer and more.
Standard inspections throughout North America will include:
“Inspection of brake-system components to identify loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brake-system components. ABS malfunction indicator lamps are also checked. Inspectors will inspect brake components and measure pushrod stroke where applicable.”
Since Level I Inspections include a full check of license, logs, and medical certificate, as well as a check of other systems on the vehicle, these inspections will be looking at much more than just your truck’s brakes.
And they’re serious about it too. Last year, 2,321 trucks were placed out of service of the 18,817 inspections that took place.
So if you’ve wanted to fix that one wiper for a while, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet – now might be a good time!

I wish they would take into account that our customers dont pay for our truck maint. They barely pay for reefer fuel. I would love for my truck to be pristine, but my family needs to eat and live indoors also.

Rufus, stop hauling cheap freight.
Any customer who doesn’t understand could be a shiester likely to not pay as well, why encourage them.
We turn down freight everyday, if bad brakes are required, if killing people defines *their* bottom line you can’t let that define you as a carrier!
If they don’t care about killing people on the highway perhaps they don’t mind listeria in the food product? How about Ecoli?
Would you want *their* tainted product in YOUR trailer? Only to spread that disease to your GOOD customers?
Think about it, brake shoes are 38 bucks, drum 100 bucks, slack adjusters 70, that’s not a deal breaker on a budget, killing people on the highway costs a lot more, ,,,,, maybe your company. . How will the kids eat when you’re in jail?

That guess you need to find another job if you can’t keep your truck up to safety standers.

@Rufus
Do you pay you’re local grocery store to maintain the safety of their shelves, carts, refrigerators, or buildings?
No, of course you don’t.
So grow up and quit whining, quit being negative, and get that ‘poor me’ chip off your shoulder.
No one starves in this country, that’s for sure!

We are grown men who are treated like children. Im so glad i got away from companies. Having my own MC has been life changing. Why brake your ass for a company? Better to put your energy in your own and forget about leasing to one of these big companies it’s more or less a glorified company driver position.

One of few words, I see. Nevertheless, the most accurate and relevant statement on thus thread, so far. I can stop reading it, now, because you nailed it on the head.

It isn’t going to change. “SAFETY” is No.1 when it comes to our US highway system, or any industrial business for that fact. If, the company you drive or work for doesn’t care about your safety; then they do not care about public safety. So, why work for them, go else where.
Also, if you are an OO, you should know better in keeping your own rig in compliance. If you don’t because you want to make a buck, then shame on you.
Everyone must remember one thing. That is, if you want change in this country, you need to stand up for your rights. That means writing or emailing letters to your congressmen or senators whether it is State or US level. Anyone who complains over the internet will never get any where; you need to be politely active in what you want.
Like the old saying goes, “United we Stand, Divided we fall.”
