Maine has installed scales directly into the road on Route 236 and Route 1 in order to catch truckers bypassing the weigh station on I-95. A camera linked to the scales will take a picture of the passing vehicle if a weight overage is detected.
These hidden scales are expected to begin operation sometime this fall, but will only be active during the same hours that the weigh station on I-95 is open.
This is one in a series of similar scales and camera projects that are expected to be rolled out across other states by the FMCSA under the Commercial Vehicle Systems Information and Network (CVSIN) trucking violation crackdown.
