An empty truck can seem like an easy target for thieves looking to score some quick cash, and not just from cargo. The cab of a truck often contains pricy electronics… it’s just generally a good idea not to try and sell your stolen goods to the people that you stole them from. A South Carolina woman has been arrested for just that after allegedly stealing a GPS and cell phone right out of a driver’s truck and then attempting to sell the stolen goods back to him almost immediately after.
The incident occurred on Saturday the 5th of July at a Pilot station in Duncan, SC. The driver left his vehicle unlocked when he went in to the gas station and when he came out, he found that his phone and GPS were gone. When he spoke to the manager, he was told that a woman was seen leaving his truck.
Looking for the perpetrator, he walked across the street to the TA Truck Stop right across the road where the thief, not realizing that this was the man she had robbed, allegedly offered to sell him his missing GPS for $75. Unsure of whether or not the phone and GPS she was holding were his, he asked the manager to call his cell phone. Sure enough, the phone in her hand began to ring.
Once the police arrived, the thief told them that both the phone and the GPS were hers and that she was just trying to sell the GPS. Police discovered that the thief had been banned from the truck stop multiple times, placed her under arrest, and returned the phone and GPS to the driver.

He was lucky and she was unlucky but he will robbed again down the road and the cops will come but this time to collect their share of the booty. No matter where you go what you do there someone waiting out there to rob you. It doesn’t feel anymore theres any good guys out there to get rid of the bad guys. Its just bad guys pushing each other out of the way to get to you first. The good guys gave up and left us to the vultures.

What? There has never been good guys around the trucking industry from the East Coast “Lumper” services to thieves that would rob trucks back in the day when they had a lot of cash on them to pay for fuel. As a victim of one of these Jerks (that break windows to get in) I say good for him. Glad he got his stuff back. I am just surprised that it is not happening more often with this terrible economy. Truck Drivers have always been preyed on by the lowest of lows because they see a nice truck and think hay, he is rich I can take his stuff.
Steve Bell says
Really…The cops steal you stuff?….how much time have you served?

All it takes for evil to prevail is for a good man to do nothing. There are still good men out there but if we all had the fatalistic view you are portraying, your statement would undoubtedly become reality. Just be that “good man” and stand in the face of adversity.

Wow Harry. Dont be so cynical. The guy might not have been robbed if he had locked his doors. Dont give them an opertunity.

Please, everyone look out for each other!. Let’s work together and put a strong force out there, that we, Driver’s, will not put up with this crap!. Unfortunately, it’s not just the people that don’t belong on the property, it is some of the other driver’s out here that have no respect for other’s property nor privacy. Look out and speak up!, don’t just turn your head and drive away. Next time it could be YOU!.

I don’t get why they don’t have better security at truck stops and remove all the trash that hangs around them. With the prices of fuel you’d think they could afford some kind of security. When I used to drive snowbird cars I felt safe catching a couple hours of sleep in the restaurant parking lot at a truck stop. Now with all the trashy lot lizards and beggars they let hang around and they allow, you can’t do that either…a lot of people don’t like the idea of security…those are usually the ones that hang in party row and have something to hide anyway…..Drive on Brothers and sisters….Stay safe!

Because the truck stop management doesn’t give a shit whether we get ripped off or not. They only care about their bottom line and we are not part of that except for what we spend there. With the major shortage of parking spaces, they are assured every space will be filled every night no matter what goes on in their lots.

I caught a guy trying to steal my chains and binders and spare tire one night down in Houston TX.. I left him badly bruised and broken and needing some one else to feed him for a long time as his fingers were broken as were his elbows including his jaw.. I knew if I just had him arrested he would be out in the am and doing it again to someone else. I wanted him to remember every time some one put a spoon in his mouth or had to wipe his butt for him he screwed up big time.Oh yeah, I doubt he will ever be able to reproduce another just like him. I made sure of that. Pointed two cowboy boots hurt like the devil when applied just right..

With all the kids in the industry soliciting whores and drugs, it is difficult to to control the low life.
Opp’s that would also include the drivers who are soliciting.
The best system of security I have seen was a lot for trucks only. secured by a high fence, paid parking, gated, a driver gate, beside the security office. Two years later it was nomlonger in operation.
Two Thermos says
They barely make pennies on the fuel. It’s the other crap they sell that they make a profit, if any. That’s why they want to keep you standing in line at the cashier as long as they can so you see stuff and end up making “impulse” purchases. That’s why a lot of them never seem to have more than one person at the cash register.
Brad says
Jerri That’s why I always try to fuel during the pre-trip. Also I agree there is no honor left among most of the public not just truck drivers. It’s everybody for themselves and the hardworking honest person left to pick up the pieces….
Tim says
Though one wasn’t necessary in this specific case a well-concealed, inward-facing dash cam (controlled by the driver, not the employer) would have put the thief on video. Not such a bad idea for a parked truck.
Gordon A says
I agree. .Just go to a spy shop and get the pin hole cameras and have one mounted to get anyone entering the cab from either side and one or two in the bunk . A hard drive under the bunk or in the side box works . video proof is positive proof and it does not come down to he said she said. Just plea bargaining.

It has become so bad at all the Truckstops on I-20 in Dallas. The Dirty Theives actually drive up to Trucks as they turn on the dome lights and block them from pulling out with the car. Everything is exspensive in these Loves, Flyin’ Hooks & Pilots yet they don’t gaurd the lots! The Flying J at exit 472 actually has Police inside, but no security in the lots were We have to try and sleep! I try to avoid all the Truck stops Who don’t care about the safty of there Custumers-US!!

it’s always a bad idea to leave anything of value laying out for prying eyes to see. it probably wouldn’t of matter much if the door were locked. many thieves will break in anyways. the driver should be lucky that a phone and gps is all they took. it could have been a lot worse.
george w. fulk says
I’m happy he was able to get his items back. But I am sorry that he didn’t use better just mentioned. I drove for thirty years and never left my truck unlocked. I’m willing to bet he won’t be doing that again.

Lock your doors and don’t trust anyone

Simple answer… Stop parking at truck stops. Park at a Wal-Mart or somewhere low lifes do not congregate. Truck stops are over-priced and nasty places and I only go there to fuel then I am out…
Nick says
Give you that one. Walmart does watch their lots. Truck stops are a spawning point for criminals. The problem lies mostly in who they allow to drive though. Lately I’ve seen more hit and runs, vehicle theft, and road rage then I thought could be possible at any given time. Prostitution is making a comeback, so is drugs and drinking on the clock. What can you do though?
shauna says
I agree, some companies will hire anyone with a pulse( sad to say I work for one of them).

Problem is that too many former “safe places ” are off limits now because “we” as a profession often don’t respect the kindnesses afforded us by those businesses. How many of you have seen gallon jugs filled with urine, trash filled grocery bags, piles of cigarette butts, and the other assorted trash that some in our profession don’t have the decency to dispose of properly? Three walmarts I used to park in are nogo locations now because of DRIVER abuse. Sad commentary.
Donna says
I agree 100%. I was at the rest area & there were urine filled bottles not 5 feet from the trash dumpster

Years ago I met a driver that used to unlock his doors and roll down his windows and wait for someone to break in so he could shoot them. No, it wasnt me. Anyway , what im pointing out is, its a two way street. I personally have never been robbed, although I did get a couple of boxes of ribs jacked in chirak about twenty years ago. It all turned out fine and my company and I experienced no loss. Some of us enjoy the gamesmanship con artists represent. Too bad he wasnt thinking a little further ahead. He could have owned her like a couple boxes of ribs if he had wanted to. Human meat for sale……..yummy delishes human meat for sale….. I know I don’t drive an 18 wheeler. I have a hotshot rig but have to deal with all the same crap as the big rigs. I saw a truck in Dallas that the driver went inside after fueling and his whole truck was stolen by the time he got his fuel ticket. I my self had to drop my big transport trailer at the Loves truck stop in Rittsville Washington to run into town and get some parts. I was gone for about 30 minutes and when I returned a truck was trying to hook up to my trailer. I pulled up and grabbed the big pry bar out of the back of my truck and rammed it strait threw his grill taking out the radiator hose intercooler and fan. Now I’m up on charges of destruction of property and the punk is trying to sue me for mental anguish and loss wages due to his truck being out of service. Buy the way he has no job. He is a known their in the area and the cops arrested me and never charged him. I guess I should have just used the .45 on his ass. Would have been less paperwork.
John Burleson says
Every one of these posts says the same thing: lock your damned truck. We used to be able to leave our keys in the ignition and the truck running while we went into the truck stop for a few minutes but not any more. And the fault does lie squarely in the hands of the legal system. There was once a time when thieves got quickly and severely adjudicated on the spot if they were caught. But not any more. I caught a druggie in my truck in Portland, Oregon. He was climbing in the passenger door while I fueled on the other side! I held him for the police. When the law showed up they asked the scum if I’d hurt him and threatened me with jail for kidnapping!! Catch a thief? Break a couple knee caps! Walk away! Let somebody else take out the trash!

Buy a gun holster; just a gun holster. Display it on your dash, in full sight let them wonder where the gun is!

That is a good idea. If I were a thief, I’d think twice 🙂

The thief breaks into your truck, and steals your items…..but the police will steal your CDL just by lying in court against you. So which thief hurts you more ? Cops, and crooks are one in the same.

I remember back in the 73280 days a man stoled a black face Johnson out of a truck and tried to sell it to him when he was walking back to his truck, Needless to say. that guy had to go to the hospital. That was an interesting day!
