A truck driver was shot late Wednesday evening during an apparent road rage incident while he was driving on I-94 in Indiana.
An unnamed driver is recovering from a gunshot wound to his leg during what the Indiana State Police are describing as a road-rage incident.
It was around 6:40pm on Wednesday when the trucker decided to pass another semi headed westbound on I-94 near the Burns Harbor exit. I-94 has three lanes in each direction at that point. According to the trucker, a gray SUV approached him quickly from behind, and tried to pass him on the right. When the SUV driver couldn’t, there was an altercation between him and the trucker.
Then, according to the trucker, he “heard a gunshot and felt something strike his leg” as the SUV was finally able to pass him.
The Indiana State Patrol is asking anyone who may have seen the incident or observed a gray SUV with an Indiana license plate driving erratically to call Trooper Bohling or Det. Runde at (219) 696-6242.

BASEBALL bat says
Surprise! Someone got shot close to Chicago. Just so you all know, that is where the TA and Pilot are on I-94 Porter, IN.
Jon says
That is Porter county in IN.
The nearby towns are Hobart, Burns Harbor, Portage, and Chesterton. Valparaiso is South on SR 49.
All trucks should have Dashcams.
Chad says
Just wait until we are all forced to drive speed limit to trucks. The moving roadblocks will cause road rage incidences to go through the roof.
Hugo Miller says
I’m originally from Britain, where we have had speed limiters for years. Trucks are restricted to 90 km per hour (56 mph). Except that invariably, one truck is set to 55.9999 mph and another is set to 56.0001 mph, so it takes ten minutes for one truck to pass another. When you get a whole line of trucks in this situation, you have the two left lanes (we drive on the left!) blocked for mile after mile by a rolling roadblock of trucks. I have a coach business in the UK and am allowed to reach the dizzy speed of 100kph (62 mph). But I am not allowed to use the third lane, so I am stuck behind an impenetrable wall of trucks for mile after mile after mile, and can’t see a damn thing further up the road. Accident rates have gone up since these things were introduced, but it’s not about safety – it’s all about enforcing uniform socialism by making sure nobody is allowed to do any more work than anybody else. The H.O.S rules are there for the same reason – the old British rules were about safety, but now the rules are made in Europe it’s all about creating uniformity. If you want to work hard and make a decent living, the law won’t let you – the ‘Working Time Directive’ even legislates the maximum hours ANYBODY can work (not just the transport industry). This is what is coming to the U.S. unless we stop it.
Wendall says
They scraped the speed limiter law for the time being.
Dominic says
So where was the dash camera?
William says
I drove that area for eleven years. Yeah, its three lanes wide and trucks are supposed to be using only the right two. Leaves the hammer lane for Speedy Gonzales. So why was the SUV “trying to pass on the right”?
Jason says
Because there’s too many idiots in the road that have no regard for safe or courteous driving. He was clearly one of those that think trucks don’t belong on the road and any truck that is in a lane he wants to be in is simply a complete and deliberate inconvenience to him.
Billy says
Point a gun at me and I’m coming at you! You ain’t getting away!
Bad Influence says
Stand by because if the speed limiter rule goes into effect I’m sure such incidents will be on the rise.
Tim says
With out a doubt
Bill Compton says
The last time a driver was shot on the road like that. the police and sheriffs’ in the southern states, told us to defend ourselves Secondly, what does that say about the people in that area. Know well someone saw that happen .
Liz says
I’m from that area and I can tell you someone can see the lines on a mans face but when ask by the police they will tell you they saw nothing.
Oneoldtrucker says
Speed limiters are making it unsafe and piss a lot of people off on our highways because one truck can not go fast enough to pass another truck..
Bob dean says
No you work for a company that has a 62 mph limiter. My ruck can do 73 and keep up.
robert says
You are right we have that in CANADA and it is dangerous specially on a two lane highway like in Northern Ontario it is a real problem and every one are awaiting for a down hill going in order to pass with only 2 to 5 mph more.
mousekiller says
Crap like this is why I am considering getting out of trucking. At least out from behind the drivers seat. If the speed limiter rule passes this is just a drop in the bucket compared to what will be happening in the very short future. I refuse to be a target for some half wit that lacks basic driving skills of any vehicle because I am driving a CMV. Enough is enough.
Floyd says
Yeah, here’s where a dash cam might have nailed the perp
Jeff says
Well, at least he had a good reason for *SHOOTING* him. Wow, there’s some psychopaths out there. What happened to just flipping him off, swerving at him, brake checking him because he had the audacity to be in front of you, and going about your merry way? Ah, the good ol’ days.
Douglas Kirk says
Idiots in Indiana? Who’da thunk it
Jon says
I live in the next County over !
Sir, you offended me.
I demand a Duel of ??
Ah ?
Peeing on a wall?
Haha
More Idiot driving East and West Coast States!
norm says
I am a trucker and have logged over 4 million miles. Sounds to me like the trucker was in the wrong lane. Keep right except to pass, slower traffic keep right. that’s what it says in most of North America. Truck Drivers know in most states we are not allowed in the left lane yet I’m constantly having to pass trucks on the right. Should anyone be shot? NO. Should a truck have to be passed on the right? NO. I know the 4 wheeler could have passed him on the left but why should he have to is my point.
Dazzling Piazza says
Because it’s not safe to pass a truck r bus on the right side.
Squirrelmaster says
You don’t have 4 million miles running in the same lane as traffic entering and exiting without a dozen collisions on your record. And they will shoot you for being in their way in that lane anyway.
Sean says
There’s 3 lanes there, we are allowed the 2 right lanes. I drive that area every day. That driver was not in the wrong. The 4 wheelers don’t like using the far left lane, they would rather pass on the right.
Rick says
So I guess someone should take a shot at you just for the hell of it. Very few trucks pass me. My boss said you get a ticket it’s yours. And I drive his slow truck. But I am still to slow for some people. But don’t take a shot at me. Damn Yankee.
Pamela says
Because the left lane is the passing lane…?
Richard A. says
The real tragedy is that these psycotic a-holes know they can get away with it in most cases. They are gone in a heartbeat knowing they will likely never get caught.
A friend from the UK told me they have traffic cameras everywhere over there. Maybe that’s what needed on this side of the pond as well. Too many criminals are getting away with too much these days, and it’s only getting worse.
Irie Monarch says
Criminals ? Does everyone who carries a weapon considered one ? What constitutes criminality ???
Robert says
The idiot holding the gun constitutes criminality cause by itself the gun is just a tool waiting to be used.
MrYowler says
They’d only use the traffic cams to write us tickets. There isn’t any revenue, and far to much risk, in getting involved in actual violent crime.
Hugo Miller says
No! I’m from the UK – the traffic police have all been replaced by speed cameras. So you can drive like a freaking idiot as long as you slow down for the cameras. That is not the way to go.
Charley says
With the lack of Courtesy and respect. What does one expect. One truck slowing down a bit to help one to pass. Speeding up when paying a bit. Would solve most the issues.
Mark Brooker says
Sounds like more to this story than just some guy unable to pass on the right…
Bret says
Exactly why I have a 9mm holster Ed on the side of the seat as well as a 12 Guage in the bunk.
Robert Scott says
The speed limiter rule is dead. It wasn’t passEd before the new administration put a halt on new regs.
Drivers_Advocate says
Our bourgeoisie capitalist pigs thrive under their veil of protected corporate litigative hierarchy going home daily to their beloved spawn while you sacrifice your own for the sake of the almighty profit dollar. Who’s really the smarter and more intelligent? Surely, it’s not you. A company that cares not about its labor cares not that you impede traffic and pay the ultimate price of your demise. We all know governors benefit their bottom profit/loss margins, not yours. You lose, always. Wake up drivers. Their children progress the species while yours lives without a parent. Let that sink in.
MrYowler says
What the heck does this rant have to do with the story it’s attached to?
Flowery language doesn’t make you sound any smarter, or even more correct. It just obfuscated whatever you thought your point was. Do you think that you are talking to a group of knights from the 1400’s?
Speak common English, when you speak to common people, or there is no point in speaking at all.
Ron says
They we go again…blaming the truck driver. Just like the cop do. I got blame for killing someone by the Ohio Highway Patrol in 2005. The Ohio Police were doing just what they wanted. Not one cop took my side. They were covering up for another Ohio state employee. So I had to lose my CDL,and have a record. The cops in Indiana aren’t going to put much effort into helping this truck driver out. “The Indiana State Patrol is asking anyone who may have seen the incident or observed a gray SUV with an Indiana license plate “. How many “gray SUV with Indiana plates” ? Where is the bullet ? Seems that is a lead ?
hulkliner says
people hate us regardless but one thing I can say is there are a lot of truck drivers out here that drive way too fast and too aggressive and it pisses people off to the point where they will Target any of us
Irie Monarch says
There are far too many people with a false sense of entitlement and a sick need for instant gratification behind the wheels of motor vehicles period. Unfortunately people bring the best and the worst of who they are out on these roadways .
juan says
It might have been an undercover cop and was putting the driver in his place, why was he passing when he k ew he wasn’t going to pass or making any progress, this incident could have gone bad real quick, I bet he’ll think twice next time
Todd Burke says
I’m confused was the driver in the center lane or the hammer lane? It said the SUV tried to pass on the right and couldn’t. It’s posted up there trucks in the 2 right hand lanes only. Still don’t pull a gun and shoot at someone. Really?
Deaconblues62 says
Sounds to me like the truck sped up on the crash dummy car driver trying to pass on the right. Happens all the time 10000.00 times a day. Some trucks have the power to close that gap others don’t. The Trucker is lucky to be alive. I agree the dashcam with night vision is the way to go , even for your car too.
Nora says
It’s time our transportation department stop calling city streets, Interstates.
