The Wreck

A Texas bumper in the grass, a slowly spinning wheel

Once a drivers pride, now broken glass and twisted steel

Smoke is rising from the wreck, the stench of diesel is in the air

Despite the danger to ourselves we pull him out of there

Alas he died on impact, there's nothing we can do

We cover him with a blanket, shield others from the view

A families dream is shattered and their lives are torn apart

A seconds inattention he's stilled a beating heart

Parents weep for a son, a wife cries for her mate

A little child is lonely and thinks Daddy is running late

Those of us that tried to save him will go back to the game

Our love for this highway will never be the same
