Depression...

I know most people won't touch this topic with a 20ft pole but lets see who has the guts to open it up. Anyone ever just get bad down? I've had issues with it ever since I joined the military. I would never take back the experiances I had there but man did it mess with my head. I've been to the VA and alot of other specialist and they are all quacks. Usually they end up telling me its over a girl or something dumb, but its never been. Everything could be going 100% my way and right as rain, but I'll still be down. It was bad when I was otr. I just suck it up and go about business. No one is the wiser about it. What do you guys do?

We had a couple of drivers where I work that kind of describes them.

They ended up going into therapy which actually helped them a great deal.
I do believe they were on a prescription medication as well for a bit too.

I think doing what you are doing right now, bringing it out and posting about it, is the right thing to do. It may lead to you going into other directions with it as far as seeking advice and help for your down times.

I hope what Cyber says is true, we're all here for you too. I'm glad you brought it up though, it shows that your an awfully strong person. Being at home with an OTR hubby isn't fun either. He loves being OTR and I'm tired of doing everything, raising the kids, mowing grass, fixing the vehicles, unclogging toilets!! If I leave a "honey-do-list" for when he's home, it never gets done, he would have to get off the couch for that to happen!

Oh well, he's not going to come off the road, so guess I'll learn to live with it or something will HAVE to change. I just wanted you to know that your not alone in the depression - hey, maybe we could do a study on depression in truck drivers and their families. We could be rich, find out if money REALLY does make you happy!!!! LOL Hope you feel better now!!

Worry about what you can control. Think about where you would like to see yourself in the future. Head that way, life's not much different then driving. Need a destination and a time frame.

Getting things like this outside to others is a start in the right direction.

Depression is an illness that affects millions.

Yes, I've dealt with depression. Off and on for years, and for no apparent reason most times. There are times when I can actually FEEL myself being sucked into that hole. When I can feel the downhill spiral.

Now, I keep a list of things I KNOW I enjoy, that are ACTIVE things and when I feel that start, I switch gears to one of those activities. The important thing is that they are ACTIVE things. And you have to actually switch gears to do them. And they are something I know I enjoy.

Postpartum depresion was an entirely different story. Nothing cured that until the doc prescribed the right meds.

Thank you for bringing a usually silent, very hidden problem out into the light! I appluade you courage!

Bonnie

I too have battled depression for years. As a man, it's a difficult thing to deal with. We men are supposed to be strong, dependable, hard working and unemotional (if there is such a word). I've tried medication, but didn't like the side effects. I've gone to counseling, but never felt like I was getting anywhere (plus I lost the job whose insurance was paying for it). Throughout my life I've just tried to deal with it. I've tried several different self-medications. Some of which are healthy, while others are far from it. Drinking, drugs, eating, gambling, and even women have been used in unhealthy ways to try and feel better about myself. I've also tried honing in on my church upbringing, but no matter what I do it never seems to change how I feel at the end of the day when it's just me and my thoughts. I've been like this for so long, I don't even remember what it was like to be truly happy and enjoy doing things, let alone have a desire to do things.

Like Pete said, to look at me or to have a conversation with me, you would never know that I have this condition....unless you get to know me well and know something about identifying depression. And I can't believe I just put all this here....

I think it's great that a "man" can speak this way, honest and sincere. I give you 100% support (even though I don't know you), you seem like a wonderful kind of guy - wish there where more out there like you.
