Back in 1975 when I was stationed in Okinawa I took the Evelyn Wood speed reading course and we learned the same thing. Your mind sees words and phrases (if you let it). We even learned to read a book left page going down right side page going up (making a U pattern). Your mind would create pictures (sort of like a movie in your head) and you would never verbalize the words, just see the movie. Very weird, but it happened. JF Kennedy and his staff all took this course and were examples of success...or so they said.
I was able to do it sometimes, but really didn't like (trust) it. My son (age 12) reads so much that we have to go the the library in the next town cause he has read most all in our town. He read the last Harry Potter in 8 hours, no problem. He said he wanted to slow down and make it last... I never taught him anything, he just 'gets it'. He reads groups of words; amazing the human brain if not corrupted.
I think schools teach conformity, not creativity. I should know, I taught high school for 4 years.
