How much dosh does it take to persuade truck drivers to take their loads across a road made out of a frozen lake?
Well quite a lot - the hardy drivers featured here can make a year's salary in two months, so long as the ice doesn't crack beneath them. But this six-part series (two episodes this week) shows it's not a job for the faint-hearted as these drivers contend with harsh conditions and constant danger.

The industry is based in the town of Yellowknife in Canada's Northwest Territory. Every winter, engineers build 350 miles of ice roads over the region's frozen lakes to deliver supplies to remote diamond mines.
The Canada diamond industry is the third-largest in the world and generates Û1.9 billion a year so the truckers are an essential part of the nation's economy. Once temperatures have dropped and the ice is thick enough, the big wagons get ready to roll.

First off is veteran trucker Alex Debogorski, and the frozen road cracks and pops under the weight of his truck. When his brakes fail, Alex is left stranded despite all of his experience.
Friday's edition follows trucker Jay Westgard as he hauls his 17-ton water tanker to the De Beers mine, over ice only 31 inches thick. It does make you wonder why the miners couldn't just go and melt some ice...
