i can understand the rate averaging if you pulling from load boards or brokers---but if you are leased to a company---how can you make a go of it at 90 cents plus fsc??

The short answer is ... you can't. At least if you want a "business"

Leased on at $.90 per mile + fsc = buying/leasing/renting a job. Nothing more. When your truck is worn out you trade it in on a new one and start the cycle all over again.

ok--so what would you recomend for somebody buying first truck--
as for going with own auth. or putting it on with landstar---or on with something like schnieder
which would be the lesser of the evils??

You run run run, dont' ever take time off, spend 34 hours at the house and run run run again.

and then you make just enough to cover your living expenses while you run your truck into the ground.

you asked how you do it, I never said you'd like it. I know many people doing exactly that

FInd a small company who will pay you percentage and runs in your area. If you live right on the freight lane it is much much easier on you. My freight lane is mainly across I80 but I live in TX so I run for 3 to 5 weeks and then go home for 1 or 2 weeks. It would be alot easier on me, my wife and my company if I lived on I80

ok--that is pretty much what i like to do anyway--out a month then home for a bit
i live in pa with 79/90/80 all close --si i think i would kind of be in middle of decent lanes
its all kind of new as i am only used to running back to ontario--always kinda envied us drivers that can just get out and go--not having to go back and forth accross the border

your problem will be getting out of PA because everything is cheap untill you get far enough west to be out of the "east coast rates" range. You will likely end up doing a short run to chicago area for cheap then be able to get decent money going further west.

that or you will end up in the east coast trap running north and south
