Everyone assumes don’t they. I took it to get a DOT inspection at the request of the Better Business Bureau. I had already started repairs and that is why it was also failed because of no headlights and front bumper. After going over it with a fine tooth comb I had basically the same list as the TA gave me. Also, to respond to someone else about a salesman. I know they all stretch the truth but this goes WAY beyond anything I have even come close to seeing before. I guess my point is it should be against the law to not disclose the truth if you are a licensed sales business not to mention lie about it....:biggrin_25524:

Comon man, you're talking about car/truck salesmen here. That's the risk you take when you hop on a plane to check out a truck 1,000+ miles away. You saw it, you still bought it...

The law requires the dealer to do a DOT inspection and disclose any defects... that's how we did it when I sold used trucks for a living. But if the inspector doesn't see the defects the dealer cannot be required to disclose defects that they didn't find... maybe by accident, maybe on purpose.

No different than if you miss a bad light on your pre-trip and get pulled over later that day... except the DOT officer CAN cite the driver... you can't cite the dealer.

Again... it's "let the buyer beware"... that's a basic part of the law. Live and learn.

I hope that truck works good for you....

He didn't get a clean DOT inspection, but a detailed shopping list.

Could have saved 3 pages of What a dumb ##### coments had you mentioned that you had in fact inspected the truck and found most of the issues prior to taking it to the TA. But it did provide 3 more pages of time killing funny coments to read:biggrin_25519:

I will be doing some trading with them this week if all goes well. Iv'e been there looking for about a month and probably should have bought a month ago. They are pretty much as you say, you get what you see. They buy in bulk and probably at auctions.
When I was there 1 month ago they had tabs on about 200 White Freightliner Columbias from Milan trucking with 14.0 Detriots and automatics, I was actually there two days in a row testing them as they came in they were 2004 and 2005 for $20,000. On the 2nd day one came in with about 550,000 miles on it, that was sweet but they upped price to $23,000 because mileage and I backed out. But I think all they do is paint the rearend and detail them if they are on the lot long enough. I will buy from Baskin, because there is no reason to spend $10,000 more on the same truck, there not a rip off company, rather a turnaround company, I always say buy wholesale.

A little change on subject, I was leaning toward Detriot because I have rebuilt them in the past, but with the fact of wanting a newer truck, that will have EGR, the ISX Cummins seems to be standing out and the engines are basically the same except for fuel systems.Correct?

Dealers lie, if they didn't they wouldn't sell anything. Believe half of what you see and nothing that you hear.

New O/OP here and going through the process of getting our first tractor. Wanted to thank you guys for the thread.. FWIW, I've seen some good deals out of Atlanta and other places with well maintained fleet vehicles. My opinion is as long as the business is honest, I expect a little bit of salesmanship when reading ads.. For 5k I wouldn't really expect to pass a DOT inspection.. if the truck was 15k.. I would be a little peeved..

Yes but I think Detroit did a upgrade on the 14L to imulate the cummins it's about a 3-5,000 upgrade
