Don't buy a truck form Don Baskin you will pay more in repairs than you will for the truck. Look on the rip off report

That is to be expected when you buy a $10k dollar truck. You can't buy a POS that someone else has already worn out and expect to drive it for 5 years trouble free.

My is a driver and was looking for a truck in 2009 and he saw one at Baskin for $27,000. A 2005 International 9900i with 499,000 miles on it. So he called them and told them that he was interested in it they said they would hold it till he got there, the next morning he got down there and went to the office and asked him if he could take the truck for a test drive and they said they sold it and they had 5 more of the same coming in. So he got the one that seemed to be the best. When he was on his way back up he stopped at a truck stop to sleep and get fuel. When he woke up he did a walk around and found that there was a large puddle of oil and diesel on the ground. He called Baskin and told them what had happen and they said it is not their problem and hung up.

Let the buyer beware... if you got ripped off it's probably because you didn't do your homework...

That's crazy talk... I bought a '96 FLD in '01... $12,850... I ran it 1 1/2 years and the next owner still has it an runs it everyday 6 months of the year...

The price of a truck has zero to do with reliability... it's the condition of the truck that matters... you can find beat up 2009's...

So is there anyone on this board who has had a verifiable experience where they called Baskin's interested in a truck, went some days later, and the truck was there and not a lemon?

No it's not crazy talk. I never said it wasn't possible to run a old truck and make money with it. My point was you can't run any truck new or old without putting money back in it for repairs. These people complaining in this thread sound like they expect to buy a old truck from a wholesaler and never do anything but drive it. It's the buyers responsibility to check the truck out or pay someone to check it out. A old truck needing maintenance and repairs doesn't make that truck a lemon, or the person who sold it to you a crook.

My experience with them started about 4 months ago. I spent about 4 days back and forth looking over trucks. At the time, there was a slow down at work. I guess that I'm lucky or not to be about 2 1/2 hours away, I was leaning toward freightliner with a detriot engine since I have rebuilt these in the past so at least it may help me not get in over my head.:biggrin_25524:
Anyway I was a bit leary on the frames still wet with black paint and crews shining the mirrors, then all of a sudden I see 4 white Freightliner Columbias come in back to back. So I ask my sells Rep were did these trucks come from since they had not been touched, he told me that they have 15 come in over the next couple of days from Milan trucking and that they had a bid in to buy 200 of them from Milan depending on how they sale and of course room on the lot. I checked these out, but seemed pretty rough. So I told them I be back the next day to look at the rest as they came in.:biggrin_25515:

(Some advice I got from a Walmart driver on telling the shape of a used Walmart truck was that the maintence on all trucks is the same but if a truck is new on the inside or taken care of by the driver then more than likely they had the rest maintained better to).:biggrin_2558:
Back to the story, the next day, about the 6th truck was a nice one 500,000 miles on a 2005 Freightliner CL, it felt like it had just left the showroom, tight truck just the way I like em,:biggrin_255:
it was about 5:30pm when I drove it. Then they raised the price by $3000 saying it was lower mileage than the 700s & 800s I had been looking at, which to me was fair. So I told them I would come back the next day.
But next morning work started back up, duty called and if you don't make it you can't spend it and never made it back.:biggrin_25514:
Any way let me wrap this up before yall start pulling out the Sunday paper on me, went back this last week and looked at a classic they had and went home to think about and went back the next day and it was parked up by the office SOLD. If you see a truck you like, try it out and buy it, thats my advice, they told me they sell 3 to 10 trucks a day about 300 a month, the place is a truck machine and don't expect them to know to much about one unless they towed it in and had to get it running.:biggrin_25513:

I finally bought 2005 Freightliner Columbia this week and will pick up today or tommorow and let you know, needs brakes, interior good, no oil in the coolant, blow by not bad, needs all filters, oil changed, runs out good and sounds good to me (shade tree mechanic). Will check and fill all fluids and grease before I leave the lot, plan on this, change oil and all filters before I put on the road. I will check main bearings and run overhead at my shade tree.Wish me luck.:biggrin_25521:
Hope this answers your question, and will let you know how it goes.

Day 2, picked up truck yesterday. I had brought tools and supplies to check and top off all fluids. They had already topped off all fluids and cleaned up truck and was told they do this to all trucks before they leave, it was a nice surprise not to have to climb under the truck. Everthing went very smoothly it was a good day. Everyone was very helpful.

Left there and stopped at first gas station, this you can count on. Went straight to Freightliner to pick up oil and all filters to change out tommorrow. I turned in to the street to Freightliner and transmission would not shift from 2nd to 3rd, heart sunk and figured well at least I am at Freightliner. You have to remember this is my first day ever driving autoshift. Pulled in around quitting time, the mechanics were standing outside, I went up and started talking with them about the truck, telling them how I had fell out of the seat twice reaching for gear shift on the way there. Use to my 10 speed.
I talked with the transmission mechanic about the shifting and he told me that was normal that they don't shift in turns. I quess he saw my concern, told me he would take it out and make sure everthing is okay, So when he returned he told me it was a operator problem which was me, Ha Ha. But the transmission was fine and ran out the way it is suppose to. Good group of guys.

I had called freighliner that morning before picking up the truck to get warranty info egr actuator replaced, reflash on ecm, #5 injector replaced and three inspection done during warranty, not bad, at least it doesn't sound like a lemon.

My opinion, I would recommend Don Baskin, they have as good of prices as anyone. Survey your truck good and do your research and remember you get what you pay for nothing more.

Got to get to maintenance, talk to later.

    New Owner/ Operator~
My husband and I just started our company, we're waiting on our MC#, and have been looking to purchase out first truck...

2 weeks ago we found a truck we liked on Baskintrucksales.com and we called to inquire about it. We were told it was a fleet vehicle, in great shape, and would make a good first truck for us. The AD said "runs great". We spoke with Skip Baskin, who offered the truck for $500.00 less than the advertised price, and we accepted.

We asked what needed to be done as far as leaving a deposit, etc. and Skip said nothing, if we were sure that we wanted it he would put it aside until we came to pick it up. We told him it would probably be 2 weeks, which he said was OK. We asked again about a deposit and Skip said it wasn't needed, and told us "I'm only as good as my word".

Baskin's faxed our bank a purchase order with the truck's VIN, we purchased a carfax report on it, and got a loan approval for 85% of the purchase price.

We got bobtail insurance for it, and made rental car reservations to travel from SC to TN Thursday May 3rd, 2012, arriving Friday May 4th.

We emailed Skip early last week and let him know that we were arriving with cash in hand on Friday in the morning. He emailed back "that sounds good."

Yesterday morning (Monday April 30) we called to confirm that everything would be ready to go, and Skip said that he put the truck in the shop to check it out and to call him back later in the day.

We called back and Skip told us that something needed to be fixed, but he wasn't sure yet what, so we should call back tomorrow (Tuesday).

This morning when we called Skip told us that his mechanic found an oil leak, and that he had to pull the transmission to locate where it was. He asked that we call back in a couple hours.

When we called back, he said that the cause of the leak was a hose coming from the engine block, and that they ordered the hose ("it was only $28.00") but it was on backorder from CAT, but they were going to let him know by the end of today if they could express mail it to him.

We asked for the part number and SKIP said to call him back in 30 minutes while he got that from the shop.

We called back in 30 and he said he just got off the phone with CAT, and they actually don't HAVE a part number for this hose, since it has never gone bad, and that it is built directly into the block... which would need to be torn down in order to install, which meant "we may be in big trouble".

He said he will call us back when he hears something. That was at 3pm today EST.

So, at this point it appears as though our plans to get the truck are canceled for this Friday. We'll need to reschedule our appointment with the bank, change the effective date of the insurance, change the travel reservations, and change my work schedule. Inconvenient but understandable. Sometimes things happen.

At this point I have no reason to doubt that the truck will be repaired, and I'll be able to finalize our purchase, but I wanted to contribute to this thread with real-time information, and also get opinions/ advice from more experienced owner operators...
    Thanks~
