Ok. Here it goes. I was a company driver for a few years and have driven: T2000, freightshakers, Volvo's, 1 eagle.

I would like to become an O/O and am looking to buy the truck. Never had owned a semi-truck. But, was and still do work on the automobiles. So, I'm mechanically inclined.

I really do like the volvo due to its comfort, clean looks, roomy interior for it's size. One piece windshield and door windows. and much more when looking from the driver's view.

I've spoken with few shop mechanics about the volvo's and their quality. the advice that I've been given is to stay away from volvo engines, I have no problem doing that. I've also been told that volvo's have electrical problems with volvo engine and no electrical problems with cummins. True?

I'm planning to haul flatbed, if I can get my hands on 53 foot rental then I will rent it until i can afford to buy 1. So, I'd be looking for 13spd tranny and possible below 3.7 rear. - Any advice?

My over all concern is the lack of info on the volvo truck it self, engine can be cummins. What, if any, are the problems with the volvo truck vs others: paccar, international, freighshaker.
Advice on the truck and why?

I was not able to find sufficient info that will state that volvo is bad truck due to some crazy issues - if known by you and you're the owner of one then please explain.

There are however, some posts within a post about the volvo but, nothing conclusive. So, please, stick to the subject and do not wonder off and/or post anything that is not related to the original post for my sake and the sake of others who are looking for the concrete, reliable information from the owners ops, of the make.

    Thank you.

for flatbed, I would get a 730 with the cummins. I was not impressed with my volvo ved12 engine, poor perfomance and fuel mileage was not very good.

I have personal exp with a 2004 670 volvo w/cummins and would not do it. I would stay away from 2003 to 2007 because of the known EGR issues (check Mr. Haney and the PDI website if you doubt me) other than that, Volvo's are comfortable but do have known electrical issues (I have experienced numerous issues) I would also go with the bigger cummins (500 instead of the 400) as I have heard of less issues with them. Parts are more expensive and if you need a repair, go straight to the dealer if possible as others will rip you off when they jack the price up on your part that they had to get from the dealer anyway and I have always gotten good service from Volvo dealers and cummins, plus they have warranty on their work. I personally went back to a freightshaker classic with a 500 detroit that is pre-egr as the volvo really left a bad taste in my mouth and a hole in my wallet

Thank you. I've got the 2007 780 with 400st 2006 cummins isx. 13 SPd. 3.55 rear. So far so good. Knd of. My vgt started to leak oil at the VG crank, I have the NTP warranty and going to replace the turbo under the warranty. Egr valve is disco so, no egr issue. Now, I'm thinking about replacing my radiator with the rad for the auto trans and plumb the engine oil into it. If I can get 25*f - 50*f lower temp, that would be great.

I was a big Volvo skeptic like many others, until I owned one!

My Volvo with the 500 Cummins is my favorite truck I have ever had. Not sure I'd be able to buy a Freightliner, Kenworth, or International again after driving the Volvo.

I drove a volvo in the late 90's with the Volvo engine. The truck was comfortable to drive, was roomy inside, but the motor wouldn't pull worth a flip and the jake might as well have not been on there.

I keep hearing the 500 cummins is definitely the better engine as not all the problems of the 400. One thing I did see was the higher temps all the time in the 400. You should look to PDI for a bigger/better intake also or what else they might suggest. Good thing you have the EGR disconnected already, what a PITA!!!! I do know that PDI has a better turbo and exhaust manifold for the cummins that I was really looking into buying before I changed my mind and got rid of the truck for a proven engine that is pre-egr until I get around to buying one that uses DEF a few years from now. Talked to a lot of mechanics about the DEF trucks and they all said if you buy new, get a truck with DEF instead of the EGR or go pre-egr.

I would have bought the truck with the Volvo engine if not all of the emission garbage. Engine is quiet, fuel
    Efficient, made well. Hp
Can be brought up. Because of the emissions, I will not buy one. They have more problems then there are Volvo shops.

Correct me if I'm wrong: def comes with egr-right?
Bigger intake does not do anything to the mpg on the stock engine. I ordered the Donaldson muffler, that pitsburgh power sells, only a lit cheaper. After Installation I'll see what will happen. 400hp can be boosted to 500hp w/stock hardware -electrically. I only have 1650 TQ on the tranny. However, I've been told that I can get up to 2100 TQ if I don't drag race.

Have a Volvo 01 with pre-emission cummins 500 isx....love it. lots of power, good jakes, good on fuel. Grossing around 100 000,53' box, driving mountains and getting good millage, compare to my bodies pulling same load same route on freightliner wit Cat engine.Very comfortable, roomy. Only electrical issue \i had was my plate light bulb kept burning out...changed for Led and no problem any more.
I drove a freightliner, kenworth, international.....but volvo was love at first sight.
