As long as the loads are there you can't beat 90%. What are you hauling, Van, Flat, low-boy, reefer, tank? Can you pull your own loads if they don't have the freight?

Bug

Mercer just cut 200 O/O's in March '09. Came up with some kind of system in which all dept heads were consulted and then the ones that didn't pass ALL the tests were dumped. Can't remember where I read it.

I am pulling flat, and yes I can find my own loads if they dont have any thing in the area. Today I loaded from just outside of Toronto. It finals in Minneapolis and has stop off in Chicago. Loaded miles is suppose to be 1085. Load would pay me 1807.25 after companies 10%. Also would be getting 267.50 for fuel and 50.00 stop charge. So my total take for this load is 2124.75 for 1085 loaded miles. I will factor in fuel after I am delivered. I cant figure in tolls because we use EZ pass and I have no idea what they are.

Buying truck AND trailer is the way to go. The extra revenue will make your trailer payment easily. Be careful of % pay. What I mean is some companies manipulate the figures. You think the load paid $1400, for example, but it actually paid $1525. Also shop for insurance rates.

Figuring in tolls is pretty easy.. Just do a web search for each state that does tolls and they will have a specific website that has toll calculators that are fairly easy to use.

If running on percentage you have the right to see the exact #'s. I'd have to look it up again but it is law.

Granted it's usually $1.00 a mile all miles, but hauling flatbed we average closer to $1.75 a mile all miles - and for the SAME miles!!!

There's a lot of other factors, I know...like FSC (fuel surcharge), fuel discounts, maintenance discounts, etc...but when you look at the numbers at the end of the year, what does your net really come down to?? It still has to be less than $1.00 a mile...

Not to mention the POTENTIAL to make MORE. If you're leased on to a company that pays $1.00 a mile all miles...that's it...you know that you have to run 2500 miles to make $2500.00 period...there's no cutting corners...but with a flat, you can make $2500 easily by running 1000 miles...up to $5000 for that same 1000 miles hauling LTL's. Then when you look at the numbers, you're not only spending less on fuel, but your giving yourself a chance to grab another 1500 mile trip while the van or reefer guy is still hauling the same load for that original $2500.00 - how do you guys do it????

Thanks!

I don't understand it either, they just try and drive more miles and drive them faster. Quantity over quality.

Sorry...the main reason I posted this is because I was curious about Mercer - we've been looking at Landstar, but haven't really heard much about Mercer - do they run the same way (you find your own loads, etc)

Thanks!

Where the ones you make $1.75 per mile your having to pay most of the expenses on the truck, Plates, all insurance, ETC. Where I am I do get paid 0.90 per mile plus Fuel Surcharge yet I will make about the same as you would having to pay all the plates permits and etc. My operating cost was at 0.40 per mile when I had my Columbia. So right now I would be making around 0.60 over operating cost. Where if I was having to pay for the plates permits and much other operating expenses, as you more than likely will to get the $1.75 it would equal out in the long run.

From my understanding also with Mercer, Landstar and Companies that paying percentages your not getting paid for empty miles where I am at the 0.90 per mile.

All I have to pay is Bobtail Ins, Fuel, maintenance and my payments on the truck.. I average 3000 miles a week and had 3 weeks at or knocking at 4000.
