Seems that despite the cost of fuel increasing faster than rabbits breeding....I'm still seeing "Cheap loads".....

Now I know what some of you are saying......"Hey....aren't you the one who says 'Know your BPE and what a load costs the O/O before taking the load'?"

Yep....But......If everyone knew their actual costs...There wouldn't be any "cheap loads" on the ground....

And I have also stated that it doesn't matter what the broker keeps as long as you make the money you need....

What I'm getting at is, I had a discussion with a broker who called me out of the blue yesterday....

We discussed rates versus the fuel costs....
He stated that he can get some great rates from some shippers...But some shippers will not budge an inch on rates....Hence the "$1/m Tarped loads".....

I know from talking to some "directs" that they actually expect us to eat the costs of fuel above and beyond of what the EIA says what fuel costs are based on the reports.....

So are there any of you who can actually run on loads that are $1/m and make your BPE?

I'll wager that you O/O's in Cali can't unless you skirt CARB and the BIT program......

The scum that steal fuel from the truck next to them, or buy fuel at a discount on someones card probably can.

Uhhh.....No, Only an idiot would haul for less that around $1.80 a mile right now.
My rate right now is $2.18 P/M and I'm getting it but there's some haggling involved.

    Key words in BOLD!!!!!

If more of us did that.....there would be no "cheap loads"....

We get LS load proposals (among other brokers) emailed to us daily....There are plenty of loads....But LS emailed us loads for $1.20/m.....Come on.....I can see Bennett or "Cheap and Heavy" doing that sheyat.....But LS?

Seems to me the Law of "Supply and Demand" should come into play.....

There are more loads sitting than there are trucks to move them.....

My guess is that rates were beaten down so long that many are just satisfied with whatever the brokers throw out at them....

You don't have to be nasty to the broker who can't or won't go up on the rates....Just tell them as I do...."Sorry...I guess you can't help me and therefore...I can't help you either. Thank you....."........

Done and done.....You move on and ask for what you need to make it work for you.....

So far...no one as of yet...Can run for a buck a mile......

So why are there cheap loads if no one says they take them?

WCP: I had almost that exact conversation today with a low rate broker.

First a little whatisithowheavy small talk then
Me: I'll do this one for $1,950.
Broker: Oh man... I can only go $1,400.
Me: Geez. Sorry to hear it. Good luck with that partner. You sure you can't come up on that?
Broker: Yeah this is all I've got on this one. I've been hearing that a lot today.
Me: I'll catch you next time with a different one. Have a good day.

It didn't end that way on my last load. 10 minutes after I turned the load down, the broker called me back saying the shipper changed a few things and could I get you to quote it? I priced it right, for more cpm than my earlier offer and got the load. Icing on the cake was the consignee's hair was on fire to get the load fast so I got the truck empty a half day sooner and skipped an extra stop. No discount of course LOL.

It's a hustle every time and you never know when that guy's gonna call back with a good one because you were professional about turning them down on the cheap stuff.

I would love to get a DOLLAR A MILE TO RUN!--Hell I'd love to be able to do more than walk fast--but if you saw the scars on my knees--due to 5 surgeries back when I was a kid playing ball--you would be happy to be able to walk also!
    Just my$.02
