Seeking Cheapest Random Drug Test Consortium - Labworks vs OOIDA CMCI

I really wanted to avoid compliance companies in general, but determined that at least where the random drug testing is concerned I will need to join a consortium.

I am a new entrant owner operator with just 1 driver. Technically i could have my own random drug testing program, but never found anything on the internet about how to do that in a 2 person company and figured at some point the DOT folks might fine me for trying to do that.

So I pretty much gave up on that idea and decided to try to find a consortium on the cheap.

A lot of folks speak highly of the OOIDA so I checked them out. Looks like $45 for the membership, $100 for the program cost, same for the driver except $10 for the membership so that is $255 The program does not include a pre-employment drug test, but it is an add on for $50 so there are 2 of us so that means we are now at $355 through them. Looks like pre-employment alcohol test would be $30, but I'm not including that at this point, because I don't know if that is a requirement to have the alcohol one done.

I called Quest diagnostics thinking they would be really cheap, but they don't want to work with individuals, but I got a lead from them to go to Labworks. labworks-usa dot com

So far I am pretty impressed with them. You can order about any test you want just by adding the test you choose to the check out cart. However, the Pre-employment drug test, the DOT Panel 5 Drug Test is $67. The DOT Alcohol Breath Test is $42. However, they are running a special on the Drug Abuse Profile, Urine (Seven Drugs + Alcohol) for $55 so overall cost for a 2 person company trying to comply with the new entrant requirements would be $49.95 for the owner and $25 for each additional driver so that is $75. Then throw in 2 of the $55 dollar drug test specials and you are now at $185 and enrolled in the random drug test program.

$185 Labworks vs OOIDA at $355 - initially it sounds like a no brainer, but here are a couple of variables. If you get selected for a random drug test then OOIDA pays $50 toward that test - I don't know what the price of their test so I'm not sure how much it would end up costing me. Labworks on the other had is going to cost $67 for the test unless they have another special they are running so you don't get the benefit of a discount so you get no $50 discount on random test.

Other differences OOIDA throws in a 2 hour supervisor training video where as Labworks charges $55 for the Supervisor training certification.

I hope to find something on youtube to avoid the training videos so I doubt that that is much of a factor.

I'm still piecing this whole compliance thing together.

I'm pretty much a do it your selfer so it is not always about money with me - I like to control most of the process if I can.

Anyway, any feedback or suggestions of competitive consortiums would be welcome.

Go with what you're comfortable with. OOIDA's program seems inclusive. The other one you found seems to offer ala carte. I chose OOIDA so I don't have to be bothered with anything besides putting stuff in the file that they send me, since they manage the program for us. They also provide a DVD training program so you get the check in that box too without any effort other than watching the video.

For the extra money I have piece of mind not to worry if my ala carte solution passes muster or not. And less administrative work too.

I'm with OOIDA. Very happy with them. Didn't feel like a sales job talking to them to but a bunch of other stuff.

I have been checking out this company.

They seem to cover all bases for O/O and pricing is reasonable...

While cost is important another crucial item is compliance. Being a new entrant you will have to go through an audit. With fines what they are for non-compliance in D/A testing I would want to be sure that whomever your consortium is that you will be 100% compliant.

I paid a ONE time 40 dollar fee. Granted each time I get called I think its 58 bucks. But meh. I ain't payin yearly dues. Just google stuff in your area. You'll be much happier than dealing with OOIDA or any other big market drug test facility. Do some research. In the end you'll be happy you did.

I'm a new entrance O/O and signed up with CMCI. I already had the OOIDA membership, so I don't feel the membership cost is part of the CMCI cost. Plus, by already being a member I was able to renew my OOIDA membership for $25 instead of the standard $45.

The pre-employment was $50 at a small truck stop clinic at Truck World in Hubbard, OH. Most truck stops the pre-employment drug screen (alcohol pre-employment is not required) is about $50-$60. I was told if you go to one of their clinics, you don't pay anything for a random. You only pay if you go to a non-participant and get a $50 credit toward it.

Either way, it's simple and I'm 99.99% confident the OOIDA deal is compliant with the DOT. I don't have as much faith in other groups. And since I know I will be going through an audit eventually after starting up, I am not going to take that chance. Maybe down the road I might migrate elsewhere.

I have stated in other threads that I would stay away from any program that is not started as one for trucking. Very specific rules that need to be followed.
