So the broker messed up. He didn't setup the proper unloading time (they messed up , and even admitted it), so driver had to sit a day, and lost money on another load that he had to cancel. They told me a typical layover is $150. Is that really the standard ? Cause it seems to me that he is losing MORE money then just sitting there.
Whats a typical layover fee?

It's negotiable really, but from a broker, I would say more like $250.
SHC Thanks this. -
Depending on the situation I am looking at between $450 and $650 per day. It will cost them about $400 to put it in a transfer facility and then have it delivered.
Sounds like it may be late for this but in future when they screw up ask what transfer facility they use in the area and ask that they arrange delivery ASAP. Most will sputter, bigger ones will know where you are going with this and offer to pay you if it is just a day. Remember, when you sign the load agreement they expect you to live up to your commitment. Make sure it is a two-way street.
Full disclosure, I was asking a similar question a couple months ago.rank and RedForeman Thank this. -
That's correct, you do want a days revenue for layover, but, you also want to keep on good terms with this broker, IF, he is good to you . I would accept $250 and tell him he owes me one.

I agree with the $250 but would try for more like I would give them 2 hours then $50 an hour for the next 10 hours then I will give them 13 hours then back on the clock at $50 an hour
Hey I'm a ex union driver -
I think we get 500 a day, normally.

$150 means he's pocketing an extra $100 minimum for somebody screwing up and making you layover. I have no problems with brokers making money on the load, why else would they deal with us, but I wouldn't think $150 for layover is fair in any situation.

BigBadBill is right on the money. They will try to charge you back if you don't live up to your end of the contract (rate confirmation). Expect the same. What does your truck make per day? $600.00 (pre FSC)? Take into account you have no variable cost (or very little) for sitting. I would say $400-500 is the least you should get for a day of sitting. Adjust accordingly if it is less than a day...ie you could have unloaded at 5PM, but had to wait until 7AM...not that big a deal. Factor in the relationship with said broker and your ability to negotiate. Start high...you can always come down.
