I am looking at going O/O and want to know if now is a good time for it.

Now, the reasoning behind this is that I can't seem to find a driving job to save my life. I thought to come here, post what I have going on, and see if anyone here can tell me why I can't get a job and/or if going O/O is a good idea at this time.

I have been out of a truck for 2 years due to getting fired from my last job. The last two years I have spent trying to find a driving job or a job that would last and pay the bills. I have lost, pawned, or sold every-thing I can and have had to move in with family.

Driving Exp: I have had my class A since 1999 with mostly dry van and reefers. I have run the lower 48 and a small part of Canada.

Work Hist: The last two years..unemployment, working for cash, short term jobs. Before that I was driving OTR out of Grand Rapids, Michigan but lost that job because I made a dumb mistake after being late for a delivery.(I made more then one mistake, more like 4 or 5 all at the same time.) Other than that I've only been out of a truck for a year due to my youngest child's medical issues so basically I have 8 years in a truck both locally and OTR.

In the past 2 months alone I have put out so many applications, resumes, and phone calls that I've lost track of how many I've done. I have one ticket and one accident on my MVR that are both a year and a half old. (ticket stemmed from the accident) Everyone tells me to hire on as a driver for an O/O but my last experience with that didn't go so well and lately there haven't been that many listings for O/O's looking for drivers. I'm extremely frustrated and trying to find a way to support my family - they've been amazingly understanding but I'm the type of guy that feels it's his job to provide.

So anyway, any thoughts, suggestions or helpful opinions would be greatly appreciated!

The reason for not getting a job is a combination of all I have quoted here.

You have a Catch-22. You need to put time between accident and tickets but you are getting to the point that you will not have enough recent OTR experience that people will hire you.

Idea of going to work for an O/O may be your best bet. Not all are bad. Call up the guy at JBH that does the Power Only program. He seems to have people that need to hire drivers or are in a position to add another truck and driver.

    Dark Wolf Thanks this.

If you lease a truck on somewhere you will have to meet their driving requirements. If you run yourown authority you will need thousands tostart andmake it work.

Get some insurance quotes first. I'd guess you could get insurance. Probably about $8,000. - $10,000. a year. About $1600. - $3000. down payment.

Often the insurance comes with a 500 - 700 mile radius if you are having trouble getting insured. I think you will with violations on your driving record.
