3 car haulers stop at scales?

I think most states go by weight of vehicle and not the type of vehicle. Isn't it 8,000-10,000lbs? Less than this and you don't have to pull into scales. I know expediters in a cargo van keep it below 10,000lbs for this reason.

 

I asked a high ranking Florida DOT a similiar question last week. His answer was one word. COMPENSATION. If you are paid to move something, no matter how small, if you receive money to do it, they require you to pull into scales in the Bikini State.The example he gave was a 1 ton dually pulling a small trailer delivering nursery plants to a customer and under 26,000 pounds, pull into scales, but if you own the truck and trailer and go to nursery and pick up your own plants, by-pass, if under 26,000.
Just what he told me.

 

Using the logic here, even the guy going and getting his own nursery plants is subject to the rules and should pull into the scales. It is a commercial activity as well.

 

No, it is not. No money has exchanged hands. He is not compensated by anyone else. Much like an RV being driven by its owner. He is not doing it as a job.

 

Better think about it some more.

Many states have been nailing them for that reason.

Same with the race car haulers who race their cars for profit.

My cousin has a car lot in Missouri and went to Iowa at an auction. He was hauling the cars back and they nailed him for the reasons I mentioned.

 

There you go, trying to use logic to comprehend regulations! THAT is a recipe for insanity!

 

Medic, what they are saying is a PRIVATE truck owner, going to get his own tree's from the nursery. Is not required to stop at scales, he is not being compensated by ANYONE.

But Iowa chased down a private RV hauler for bypassing the scales on 34 one night.

Missouri says ALL VEHICLES registered and licensed over 18,000 must cross scales. Private or commercial makes no difference.

 

If your power unit or combination is 10,001 lbs or more you are subject to the FMCSR's, Title 49 CFR. My suggestion is to get the FMCSR's or look at them online at www.fmcsa.dot.gov

Second I suggest you contact your local scale facility in your area. Ask them a bunch of questions. Then I would call the State's you plan on running through and ask them. Some states's require combinations over 5 tons to enter, some State's are at 26,000 lbs. You are subject to all the regulations. I get a lot of hot shots that try to fly under the radar and do nothing to comply with the regulations. Fines add up quickly and cut deep into your piggy bank. When you are starting out you do not need to run into one of us and set yourself in the hole. Do it the right way and then you do not have to worry about getting stopped and cited for numerous expensive fines.

 

If he was hauling RV's he was getting paid.
Missouri makes ALL RV's driven on vacation pull in ?? Plenty of RV's weigh over 18,000.
