In understand that all states are different.
But a private motorhome, or home owner going to get some trees, should be able to talk their way out of it. They are not commercial vehicles.
Here in WI, all vehicles over 4ton {(IIRC) (it might be only commercial vehicles} have to pass over the scales.

    Always a guessing game.

Your neighbors to the west are really bad on them.

Saw a little pickup pulling a small white trailer get chased down for blowing the scale. Got escorted back.

Yessir, Mr. Dieselbear. The Florida DOT was not saying they were exempt from any safety rules, just they were not required to enter the scales.
That is why I asked the one of the BOSS Bears.

Not exactly, look at the State's signs as you approach each Scale house. Some say "All vehicles over X number of lbs must enter". As I travel the US I am surprised by the difference from State to State on which vehicles are mandated, 10,001 lbs, 18,000 lbs, 20,000 lbs, or 26,000 lbs. The federal regulations apply to all vehicle or combinations that are 10,001 lbs or more.

The CDL requirement (Part 383) deals with vehicles over 26K, Haz mat placarded, or 15 passengers for hire. The CDL requirement of 26,000 lbs confuses a lot of folks. Most folks think they don't become commercial until they hit 26,000 lbs.

Used to deal alot with a company that had MANY small trucks and trailers and managed to meet many of these guys for the same reason. Blowing by the scales.

I was the dot company guy that had to clear things up.

I am just saying what they have told me during inspections.

It is their rule. Private campers as well.

Iowa chased the guy down for the same reason.

    Do they chase everyone? No.

Montana has some funny rules now.

They only want vehicles commercially used with a gvw over 26,000 lbs.

HOWEVER, not all of the scales have the signs that state this. If not stated all CMV must enter the scales.

I was in the scale house in montana one day a couple years ago. They had a big inpsection day going so they were pretty much talking to everyone. Why I was there they had chased down a young guy in a dodge pickup and a gooseneck flat bed trailer hauling scrap metal to be recycled. They had this poor guy there for atleast a hour asking him questions and making him prove he wasnt for hire. I really wanted to tell them how I fealt but since I was undergoing a level 1 I kept my mouth shut. However this stuff is caused by them catching people hauling for hire with out proper permits and so on.

And they are not even getting close to catching most of them.

If it is Florida & they are moving plants...They probably aren't moving them to a nursery. ;)

California used to have a sign before the scales saying "no pick ups". Not sure if they changed it out there.

Also more states are enforcing length laws if the pick up pulling a trailer has a bed on it or not. In FL. you had to buy a $20 permit if you were over 65' end to end w/bed on or pay a $1,000 fine.
