Just wondering what other O/o are charging for log hauling. Pulpwood/saw bolts/tie logs I'm located central wi and average .28 cents per mile plus 11 per cord for pulpwood, but am going to start hauling saw bolts and tie logs also. Would assume the rates are higher on these due to they are bought by the mills at a higher price than pulpwood. It's not like I can go on the load boards and see what the going rates are and seems the loggers and mills will try to get a guy to haul for as little as possible. Anybody care to share any info would be appreciated.

For me it depends on the type of wood and length of haul. For example the 2 mills i mainly haul logs for, one is hard wood one is soft wood. For the hard wood mill i get $155 a thousand board feet, put between 4 and 45 hundred feet on and the rate is $155 a thousand board feet flat and the miles on that run is 165. For the soft wood mill i put around 53 hundred feet on and the rate is $135 a thousand board feet and the miles are 210. As fuel go's up my rate does also.

Pulp wood haulers in my neck of the woods are paid mileage, and have 4 or 5 mills to haul to. My friends that haul logs are only getting 3 and a half to 4 bucks a loaded mile, mostly within 60 miles one way. They are starving to death, but there are just too many log trucks around. And some of them are the junkiest trucks I have ever seen.

Rbht is that 165 miles round trip or one way. Not use to figuring it out by board ft. All new to me wanted to give log hauling a try or it was go otr flatbed which I will do if this doesnt work out. Seems like some guys do ok some not. I figure if I can't make 21 a cord even if its a 20 mile haul on not doing it. Now I got a guy who wants me to haul bolts and tie logs. Hauled a load the other day 10.92 cord all 8'8" made 229 seems like I should make more bolts go for 135 per cord and 180 on tie logs is what mill pays. All though only had haul it 15 miles. Pulp I do ok got lot of calls some will pay some think I'm to high I just tell them find someone else. Average on pulp 4 dollars a mile loaded. Sometimes I can get a load back that is nice when it works out. Fuel prices are too high and sound like there goin up too.

165 miles is one way. I run flats with log stakes and bring lumber out or back so loaded both ways. Around here every thing for logs is paid by the thousand board feet and pulp and firewood is mostly paid by the ton. What are bolts? never herd this term before. Around here ties are $225 to $250 a thousand. For the short haul an example is a 50 mile one way trip will pay $65 a thousand board feet plus 20% fuel surcharge or about $325.00 a load.

I think saw bolts are just saw logs taken further up the tree not sure just haul them. I think one place is paying 100 per 1000 board ft. on tie logs or might of been saw logs. Not sure how many cord are in a 1000 board ft though. Rbht so you don't have to load either with your set up they load you. I have a straight truck with a loader on back and a pup trailer I pull. So I self load, which I think would charge more since I am self loading. I load cross ways so I have to get load straight. Eventually I want to set my truck up with bunks and get a crib style pup trailer. Or get a newer truck already set up with bunks or might just buy a truck and set it up with loader and bunks myself. Cheaper if I do all the set up work.

Of course mills are going to try to get truckers to hauler it cheaper. When I hauled forest products we were always competing against bottom feeding, rate cutting knobs who would cut the rate to get the hauling only to lose it back to us because they couldnt keep up to the crews or they went broke. Number one hard maple was selling for $800 a thousand 5 years ago. Buy the time a logger pays the land owner for the wood(stumpage), absorbs the cost of putting it on the road(equipment, labor, fuel, workcomp) and pays a trucker to haul it you wonder how there is any profit in it. Bolts are usually 7-8" and up and saw logs are usually 10" and up.

Yea I bid a small job had about a one way haul of about 35 miles or might of been 40 miles one way. I think I said I'd do it for 24 a cord guy said he found a guy to do it for 15 a cord all I said was better get him quick cause he won't be around long hauling at that price. Thought I'd give log hauling a try if it don't go I got truck at good price so if I need to sell shouldn't be a problem then ill try over the road. Jumbo you are from wausau area ?? Not to far away then. Do you know the average going rate for bolts/saw logs and tie logs ? I had one guy wanted me to go all the way to reedsburg from home the haul some pine pulp to wi rapids 75 miles loaded for 10 a ton. I said you realize how much diesel costs don't you.

Yes they load and unload me. Hauling in your area is totaly diffrent then around me. Guys around me with a truck and loader are doing around $700 to as much as a grand a day. Multiple loads all short runs under 60 miles one way about a 8 to 10 hour day.

Rbht. Is that gross pay or after fuel is taken out. ? It seems like the saw mills just don't understand what it cost to truck there logs. I'm working with a local logger now and he is paying better than most. Some of these loggers I just can't figure how they figure a trucker can haul for what they want to pay of course there the same one's complaining that they can't find anyone to haul or I had guys haul but they take one load and won't come back. Like I said it don't go i'll sell the truck and go otr flatbed.
