i just purchased a truck and they left the plates on the truck and they are still good. Can i use these plates or do i have to go get new ones and pay my 2290 tax.
I'm leasing onto a company and they said i need to get my own plates, so what do i need to do or can i run with the old plates.
Can I use the plates that came with the truck?

If the plates aren't in your name etc, then they wont work. Kind of weird a seller leaving a plate on any vehicle, never mind a class 8 truck.

The plates need to be tied to your DOT number or whoevers DOT number you're leased onto. Therefore the ones you just inherited are useless.

First (if you don't allready have it) call the irs and get your ein then go to your local irs office (you may now be able to file on line but I like to go in person) pay you 2290 (it will be prorated probably around $200) then go to the dmv and do your registration and get your own plate...good luck

Yeah, unfortunately it's a lot more complicated than just having a piece of metal bolted to the front of the truck.
You're going to get a new plate when you go to your IRP office anyway. And then only way to do that, is as mentioned, go to the IRS office and pay your 2290. And mine wasn't pro-rated, I had to pay the full $550. Then take the stamped paid form to the IRP office to apply for the plate. Now plates can be pro-rated. Ohio determines when your plates renew based on the last number of your EIN.SHC Thanks this. -
Sure, just run the old plates, and don't pay your taxes, or your insurance, or whatever else you don't want to......... (please note the sarcasam)
Mr. PlumCrazy and Big_Perv93 Thank this. -
And when the DOT stops you, holler "You ain't takin' me to jail." You'll be fine.SHC and Mr. PlumCrazy Thank this. -
