    Are you talking LP or do you own a truck and leasing on?

    Regardless, mileage pay programs are a road to no where. Unless they have a very specific lane you want to run why have all the overhead of a having a truck to be run like a company driver?

    I agree with bill .. Percentage is where you make your money . It's kind of a work smarter not harder thing . A driver on percentage ( good rates ) can work much less than a 1.20-1.40 lease driver .

    That has advantages on

    1. Equipment wear
    2. Driver ( fatigue / quality of life )

    Among other things

    It is a LP you own the truck in 3 years and they are used trucks but well maintained

    But your income is limited by mileage ... Percentage is best option

    For instance ( Fake numbers I don't know mays numbers)

    May= 1.40 cpm

    Percentage = 80%

    Same load ( just different carriers )

    2.20 per mile ....

    220 x 0.80 = 1.76

    So ... If a driver for each company drove this load who did better the

    May driver or the % driver ...

    Multiply this by 2-3 loads a week and you will see my point.

    $.88-.93 to start with a $.95 cap plus FSC? This is what is wrong with LP programs. So the trucks they have you are looking at 1 of 2 situations.

    1. You do own it free and clear at end of 3 years but you have to run you butt off to make the payment.

    2. To make the payment manageable there will be a balloon. Now, many ways that can work but check that very clearly.

    Pretty simple way to look at it, but it definitely leaves out a whole bunch of important stuff.

    What is dead head pay on percentage? My guess is a big fat ZERO. Where as companies that are paying a lower flat rate which would include dead head miles paid on same rate as loaded.

    Do your same math and include 100 miles at zero pay 2 or 3 times a weeks.

    Fuel discounts are generally pretty good at bigger carriers.
    Fuel surcharge, what is the rate, how do they determine, and how quickly does it go up and down.
    Truck tags, bobtail insurance and cargo insurance rates.

    Im certainly not saying flat rate is better, what im saying is all factors need to be considered. There is NO cut and dry clear answer unless you can take exact figures and compare them side by side.

    That's where being a business person and a steering wheel holder differ
    If you pre plan your deadhead can be limited by 1-2% even taking that into the equation .. It's still leaps and bounds better to be on %
