I think you may misunderstand what IFTA is about. It is for fuel taxes to make sure all states get fair share based on miles driven in each state. And on a two state operation IFTA is going to be simple.

In terms of IRP, or plates, you can be plated in state you reside or company you are leased to. You may want to check around but most new plates are going to be cheaper if you allow them to use estimates and plate for 48 states.

    SHC Thanks this.

i know the ifta is for the fuel tax, however i was told by someone that if you plated in both states being that ill only be operating in two states that that i wont have to do a IFTA of course this very well could be miss information.

I was also told that i do not need a MC number as long as i don't transport a load across state lines, witch in all honesty does not happen very often.

I will be running my own authority I am looking to try to keep costs as minimal as possible for the first couple months. iv got some money put away for operating the truck but want to try to leave as much available funds as possible to cover any possible breakdowns ect that my occur as there will be a 2 month period of time between the time the truck starts working and the time the money starts coming in

If you're operating (purchasing/burning fuel) in multiple jurisdictions - then you'll still have to get an IFTA sticker and file quarterly.

BBB is correct, on a new base tag - just as cheap to estimate for all 48, as it would be to get a cab card for just MT/ND. I believe most states have a "standard" IRP tag fee, based on gross weight. The only real difference in the $$, is WHERE the registration fee gets "apportioned" amount the states.

For 2nd year renewal - actual miles are used (instead of estimates). While you might only "plan on" operating in these two states - you might still be better off having the "flexibility" of having a cab card for all 48 - in the event you need to pull loads in other places (you lose your contract, things slow down in your current gig, etc.). Having that flexibility allows you to drag "other things/other places" - versus doing trip permits all over the country, in order to do a few "good $$ gigs" that may come your way.

You better call ooida or someone. You will have to do ifta but i personally see no reason to add all 48, you can add them later if you need them

You add them because it is significantly cheaper when you are estimating. When you go actual then that changes.

If they want justification for 48 you contact me and I will help you with that.

Why in the world would he want to pay estimated fees for states he doesn't need ?

He's only registering for 2 states period. He still needs IFTA, IRP and MC # is your operation authority which needs to be displayed on both side of the truck along with the trucking company name in no less then 2" in contrasting color and must be visible from 50'. You will also need to get your DOT # as well...

If he were to remain withing the state of ND, then all he would need is a Intrastate authority, but since he will be going across state lines, he'll need Interstate. Lets not forget Insurances....

Me thinks he had better hook up with OOIDA and let them help him before he gets his teet in a wringer....
Oh one more piece of advice, You will need to have a drivers folder complete with a completed application going back 10 yrs and current DOT physical and drug test. This is the #1 thing DOT gets new people on bc they think that its just them... 1 truck or 1000 trucks, we all have to follow the same regulations.

I'm not going to debate with you, troll - if you do not provide DETAILS of just what information I am providing that constitutes "bad information".

Since you chose not to respond with this information on the other thread (where our final comments were deleted), one can assume your entire purpose with these accusatory posts is to INFLAME, INCITE and TROLL.

Since your join date and post count is the same as mine, yet I somehow have 2X as many "thanks" on my posts as you - I would wager that I am probably providing better information than you.

    So the facts are:

A - I provided NO BAD INFORMATION in my reply on the post (nor the other one you accused me of providing "bad info" on), and since you can provide NO CORRECTIONS, pointing out what "bad info" I have provided - one can assume your only reason for posting such baseless accusations - is to TROLL.

B - You have NO IDEA who I am, what my experience in the industry is, and what "my means to own a truck" actually are. Nor are you qualified to determine FOR ME - what capitalization levels I'M COMFORTABLE WITH or WHAT TIMING I AM GOING TO CHOOSE, regarding when I purchase a truck and enter the world of O/O.

So I would ask YOU - PLEASE STOP ATTEMPTING TO HIJACK A DISCUSSION, by not contributing ANYTHING CONSTRUCTIVE OR GERMANE that that particular conversation - other than accusing myself or others with "giving bad info" - but NOT PROVIDING ANY "GOOD INFO" YOURSELF.

I (for one) am man enough to admit when I am incorrect when the information or assumptions that I post are incorrect. And I (and I'm sure many others) would be GRATEFUL for someone of your (assumed - since anyone can put any experience level in their profile) 22 years of worldly experience could provide in good information.

    So much for being nice.

If you have NOTHING POSITIVE TO CONTRIBUTE to a discussion - in the way of GOOD INFO, and your only purpose here is to divert the discussion and personally attack ME with accusations that you CANNOT BACKUP - please F.O.A.D. and find another victim to stalk...

    Regards,

    Rick

You are correct Rick. I dont run all 48 but I have a cab card with all 48 and Canada just in case. I want the option to run anywhere I want.

And as something of a response to baseless accusations:

I would like to offer an APOLOGY to the other members of the forum, for even succumbing to responding to an obvious troll - but in the interest of accuracy and personal integrity, I felt compelled to.

I believe this forum to have a membership that provides very good advice and experiential assistance to it's members, and loathe the few posters that choose to use it to provide no positive input, other than contribute to chaos, disingenuousness and cyber-bullying.

I would ask that if DB has a personal bone to pick with me, he do it in PRIVATE MESSAGE - or NOT AT ALL.

Again, apologies to the OP and responders here...

    Regards,

    Rick
