Just curious what you guys think about a peterbilt 389 glider with a 6nz,18 speed, super 40s,etc vs. a new truck? Would you buy one, why or why not?

While I am a fan of gliders in general I would not do it until we see what the fall out is from CARB. Seeing how they are enforcing reefer regs my fear is they will be just as hard on this and used truck market will plummet. Would you consider a glider if you could get an older Pete for $30k less?

Going to Cali is the only reason for a "013" truck . Your spec glider is the way to go. I've lived the emissions nightmare and it su##s.

I would go with the glider over a new truck. Much better engine performance and reliability. So far, the only state you really couldn't run in would be California and as far as I am concerned, they could fall in the ocean and I wouldn't care.

Not being CA legal is not just about CA. The Western Region has a large volume of freight that goes to or through CA. Taking as little as 10% of the capacity out of a market has an impact. So now you have created another freight dead zone (at least thereis a good potential).
And the reasons gliders look attractive in price is because the valuation of used trucks. This has happened for 3 reasons: Emissions issues, exporting of trucks and driver holding trucks longer (ave age is over 10-years). But we could be looking at a larger reversal of the pendulum. Exports have already slowed and expecting to slow further. If rates in Western Region increase you will see a higher demand for CARB compliant trucks. And then what if rates increase and a certain percentage decide that being CA legal is important and can now justify getting out of older and into a compliant truck.
So if some of that happens are you going to be kicking yourself that your $110-120k truck is not worth $60-70K?
Now this is not me arguing to do it or not and that one is better than the other.
Just pointing out that CARB is going to have a larger impact on this industry than most people understand. And it is something that needs to be factored into a very large purchasing decision.Last edited: Jun 20, 2012

What i think of when people say screw CA.
In the 70's there were CA emission auto's and the other 49 states. People said never happen elsewhere. Only took a couple of years and it was all 50.
LSD,sold only in CA people said just don't buy it in the state. Few years later,it was the standard fuel.
ULSD,same thing. A few more years and it will be the standard.
Not to be political but an administration that pushes"clean energy"? How long before more states adopt the same rules? -
In less than 140 days we get the opportunity to change out the windmill expensive alternate energy administration.

The emission changes were under both party's. Might slow it down,might not.

Rates will go up for CA but when you have to buy fuel for $6.50/gal it all goes to the fuel bill!
