I'd say - as an O/O - as long as you have a copy of the LONG FORM of the inspection - with your maintenance records (like, if you OWN the truck - you DO keep your maintenance records - or at least a copy - right)?
The STICKER - has a check box for WHERE the Record Of Inspection is being kept (with a checkbox for Motor Carrier OR Other Entity).
49 CFR 396 Covers the details on this issue: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regu...px?menukey=396
Don't see anything in there about requiring a re-inspection if you change carriers during the 12 month validity of your current sticker - though - most carrier, to CYA, require an inspection ANYWAY when you sign on...

396.21 (b) (3) Exception. If the motor carrier operating the commercial motor vehicles did not perform the commercial motor vehicle's last annual inspection, or if an intermodal equipment provider did not itself perform the annual inspection on equipment intended for interchange to a motor carrier, the motor carrier or intermodal equipment provider is responsible for obtaining the original or a copy of the last annual inspection report upon demand of an authorized Federal, State, or local official.

Yep, I learned something.
I do think the CYA thing is valid. I always require a new O/O to have a new insp with my dot on it but that was only because I thought that my dot had to be on his sticker and long form. But apparently as long as he gets the long form from his former company and brings it to me, we are good to go.
Thanks Bill.

So far all my drivers have come to orientation with their truck. So I have a chance to look at it. Not DOT level inspection but you can get good idea. New drivers that don't bring their truck will have to have a new inspection.
However, if I could get the list of pre-hire inspection locations that LS has approved I would require people to get one from one of these locations. My understanding is they do a very detailed and honest inspection.

Thanks triple B. That's what I had thought. Just give copy of paperwork to my new carrier.
DOTs were always done by T/A-Petro BTW when I was at Malone.

Two questions really - Does a carrier have to have a new DOT? No, they just need to make sure they can produce a copy of it if asked.
Does your new carrier require it? That is a policy issue.
Part of the reason that I don't ask for a new one is it could be worthless. I have two locations that I could go to for an inspection and not even take my truck in. Heck, I have bought the stickers and forums from one to use on hoppers because our repair guy didn't have any (they where inspected).
And LS knows this and is why they have an approved list and they do it correct. If I had that I would likely set a policy to have inspection done before arriving.

Kingston Springs, TN Petro about 20 minutes west of Nashville is the nearest LS approved location where I was sent by LS before orientation. Never did get that one. It was $50 or $60 LS price for tractor only.
