California Carb laws.

    Hey guys. I'm in the market to buy a used truck.mid 90s to 2000 My biggest hang up is that I know here in California they want trucks to have pm filters by now. Or have a hard ship extension but seeing on how I don't have a company started yet I can't. I've read that if you have a filter I can run it until 2020. Or am I wrong? Also has anyone had a pm filter installed? Does it really knock the mpg to 3-4? I've considered an older rig just to not get the filter but this leads to haveing to put a 2010 motor in 2014. Should I just bank on having to spend 10k once I get a rig on a filter? Or have they changed the laws again? Thanks guys. I didn't want to jump in without the right knowledge.

    Considering the cost of retrofitting a pre-egr engine with one of those DPF's, and it is anyone's guess how that engine will then perform with a corn cob stuck in the tail pipe, I would just go ahead and bite the bullet and get a truck that already meets what CARB wants. After the cost of a retro fit, you might actually be on par or even more than the cost of just getting a newer truck. I feel for those that live in and have to deal with the CARB nazis. I gave up playing those games.

    Yeah, and then when you get all up to compliance there most likely to change the rules again. A friend of mine has a '99 freight shaker and he has to get the filter. He's thinking of moving out of cali.

    i am just giving up california runs for the time being .....don;t get paid enough for the hassle and since my truck is paid off and not in need of major rebuild yet don;t see the benefit .....but when it is time for an inframe that may factor into my decision to upgrade or not

    Does anybody know when out of state owner operators have to comply by? I'm almost thinking by the end of 2014?

    I have heard that there is an exemption for small fleets but I have yet to see it in writing. I see a lot of older trucks still on the road. I also see a lot of newer trucks on the road.

    Thanks guys. Ill price that out. There's a chart on California air research board (carb) website. Well moving out of state is a thought. Then again. It might help weed out some of the big company's.

    There is 1 advantage to CARB rules..............everyone who trucks in CA has to comply.

    Have you looked if there is some money from scheme's you might get?

    I know that certain ports on the East Coast give grands and cheap loans.

    Maybe CA has some also?(might as use ALL the rules and laws,not just the ones that cost you money)

    They did.. But I think it's pretty dried up. Also those grants are for guys that have been running. If I was to get a 96-2001 rig I'll pretty much have to get a filter rightnow. If I get a 94-95 rig I have till 2016, but at 2016 I'll need to 2010 the motor. I was hoping the price of filters would drop a tad more or atleast had the bugs figured out.
