Are broker/carrier setup packages required for EVERY broker you sign up with? Even if you are only doing a few loads a year with said broker? What should I be looking for in these broker/carrier setup packages? What is there to beware of in these agreements? I haul a reefer and my authority will be good sometime next week. I have my DOT/MC letter saying I am good and am plated. Just waiting for KYU/NYHUT to come through. With reefer, should there be something in the agreement like "Broker is responsible for any and all lumpers fees to be reimbursed to carrier" ? I have 5 brokers that know me from my previous employer and they have all said they are looking forward to loading me.

    Thanks for any help

Our setup package doesn't even have anything like that in there. All it essentially does is give us details about you, your company, # of trucks, insurance, etc. etc. It does have some fine print you have to look through and initial, but truthfully, I've never gone through it as I don't sign them.

My advice is to read through EVERY word in the packet, it is shocking what you will find. One thing that is an instant "NO", should be, and you will find this in many packages, is under the heading of direct deposit, for your payment to be direct deposited in to your bank account. What some companies want to do is require you to sign a consent form for them to "debit your bank account" if they make an error. You should NEVER give any one permission to debit your bank account. I had a merchant agreement to accept credit cards years ago, part of this agreement requires you to allow them to debit charges to your account, and "to make a very long story short", ended my contract with this company. A full eight months after ending my contract with this company, they debited my account by mistake for a very large amount of money. I was not aware of this until I had a check bounce, "the bank covered the check for me thankfully", and then called me, after searching, I found the debit and contacted the bank and merchant company, and was told that it was a mistake, and "three days later" they returned the money to my account interest free, penalty free, and without an apology. I asked the bank if I could block this from happening again, and their answer was NO. I ended up closing my account with the bank, and going to a different bank. Hindsight is 20/20. NEVER give permission to a company to debit your account for any reason, this is my opinion based on my past experience. Many other issues to be sifted out by reading through the setup packets. Use your head when you read through them, they are pretty much all set up to the advantage of the broker, and to no advantage for the trucker, it is up to you to lookout for your self, my experience has been that there are more that I would not sign than I would sign.
