As an update I've now spec out a truck and jumped through the approval.
    Spec'd out Pete 389...
5" drop wide track 13,200lb car hauler front axle with taper leaf springs
Super 40 rears with low air leaf
    3.73 rears on 11r22.5
    ISX 550/2050
    18 speed
63" ultra Platinum interior with sleeper extensions (maybe whale tail on the roof)

Currently the truck is sitting just a hair under $150K. Would really like to shave the price down though. Legacy lo seats, painted drop visor, and painted lower cab and sleeper panels will be installed before delivery.

Still having a real hard time decided on engine rating.
Anything over 500/1850 would probably work.
    So...
    500/1850
    525/1850
    550/1850
    600/1850

    550/2050
    600/2050

Seems like I'm paying so much for the 2050 drivetrain I might as well step up to the 600 or switch to the 1850.. Thoughts?

Well I ended up ordering the truck Monday.

    Peterbilt 389
244 wb (max up here in Canada)
    ISX 550/2050
    18 speed
    3.73 on 11r22.5
    full lockers
13.2 front axle (car hauler 5" drop)
    13.2 taper leafs
    super 40 rears
    low air leaf
    63" ultra with cab extenders
    Platinum interior

They told me I have two weeks to make changes. Still on the fence about going with a 48" bunk to give me more room on the frame and 11r24.5's.

I bet An older 500 N-14 can pull better than a newer Isx 550.

Doesn't really matter, it'll still be plenty to get the job done.

I've pulled LCV's for 7 years I have a Volvo 430 with Volvo D13, Volvo I-shift 12 speed transmission, Tires R22.5, and Gear ratio is 3.55. RPM's are at 1350 at 100km/h (62mph) I average 6.5 m/g. Takes sometime to get up to speed but it's about the pay cheque not how fast you go.

Legal requirement is a minimum of 450HP for LCV... However I doubt they'd ever check.
We run ISX 15 485/1850 and it's JUST enough when you start running hwy 43 or hwy 16 getting into the hills.

The D13 offers 485hp aswell the D16 would get you 550hp team that with a 16 speed I-shift and 3.73 ratio and the praires would only offer up a couple hills that would challenge it. Like Lumsden or Cluny. We have found that you can take the Volvo engine to a max of 80,000km between oil changes and the oil samples are coming back as reusable. The ISX needs to be changed at a max. of 60,000km but the oil samples show that the oil is losing it's viscocity

We're clearly running VERY different lanes...
    Running out of Edmonton -
    Hinton/Jasper
    Grand prairie/Peace River/Hayriver/Yellowknife
    Fort Mac/Oil Sands

Some night it's seems like all were doing it's pulling good grades, regularly going into the 'basement' we're not playing on the pretty 4 lane prairie highways.

I don't even see the Volvo as an option. I don't know how often you run the road to yellowknife, but hauling sets on that road I'm sure the thing would just fall apart. All that plastic really doesnt cut it in -40 to -50 beating down the shittiest roads you can think of.

The volvo purchase price is about the same as a Pete/Kw and after 5 years and 1.2+ million km you can't give the volvo away. Also have you ever tried getting a Volvo especially with Volvo powertrain fixed out in the middle of no where in these little #### hole towns of northern Alberta and NWT? They're just not suited to our application at all.

We tend to change oil every 20,000km (about once a month).

Doesn't seem to matter what your running the guys with the dpf only trucks average about 3 to 4 mpg and the guys with dpf/def are averaging around 4 to 5 mpg with the pre-emmision trucks at about the same in the terrain/conditions we're running. We have some hired cartage running brand new Volvo 630's with d16's and they're getting the same ###### mileage, but burning twice the def. Further more they nearly scale at the same weight as a 389 w/63 or a w900L w/72.

I have never been on those roads. What you are saying about fixing a Volvo up there makes sense. I run Calgary - Winnipeg mostly sometimes Winnipeg - Edmonton then to Calgary. I was not aware a Turnpike double was aloud on anything but 4-lane.
