There seem to be a number of load boards out there, ranging from free to some hefty fees. We were considering using Transcore's DAT Connect, but after reviewing their price schedule and looking at the demo, didn't see much difference (except price) from other comparable (less expensive) boards. Does anyone have any experience with DAT Connect?

They are considered one of the best two, ITS(internet truck stop) being the other. I have only used ITS. $25 month + Extras if you chose,(credit scores, days to pay etc...) worth the $ Use them.

We use ITS and have for several years. Also subscribe to some of the extras, like CreditStop.

Yes but which ones give you the better paying freight and better brokers to deal with. Or are there boards that provide shippers only and no brokers??

I was wondering about what the load board sites are that really give Independent O/O's the best "Freight Rates"?

There is Get Loaded and Internet truckstop and also DAC< which is very very expensive, can you tell me is it worth it, though????

Also where can I find info about what loads should be paying per mile?

There has to be something out there that the shippers use to determine what rates to pay, maybe I could use that to determine what to take a load for?

Rate charts might be out there too, also what to use to calculate a fuel surcharge rate into a load.

I am sure these issues have been brought up before here, but times change and maybe the info does too.

i look at landstarbroker. com every now an again just to see what they have laying around

as for rates, figure out what it COSTS you per mile to drive it
    figure in :
    driver pay
    equipment cost
    fuel
    maintance fund
    tire fund
    insureance
    plates

i know theres something im missing here...anyone else??

fuel surcharge is really dependant on what they are willing to pay
going rate for me is between 24 and 32 % of total gross load value, or just add .25
    ex
    1000 miles = $250
    or
    $3000 load at 24% fsc = $720 fsc

i guess if its worth to run you get paid more than it costs you...all you hafta do is figure out what your minimum is

there was a post on this very subject on one of these threads and it had a couple of very informative spread sheets about how to figure your operating expenses. It is up to each individual to figur out there operating expenses. But the botom line for me when i fgured it up the other day at todays curent fuel cost and figureing a reasonable truck payment worked out to about 1.25 min to break even so any thing over that would be pure profit over and above a good drivers wage's.

Keep in mind that what is on those boards is not what the shipper is paying.

Its what a broker thinks he can move it for, some times at half the rate of what the freight left the dock for.

Your goal should be to work towards developing as many of your own direct contacts as you can and use the boards when you can't.

I hold heartely agree if i was to do it on my own as a total independet i wouldn't even start till i had a couple of good contracts direct ship. And the figure i was useing as a bottom line was figureing on a lease to some one like landstar. if i was an independent i wouldn't touch any ting less than 2.00 or better by the time you figure the overhead of your authority and insurance and taxes you will loose money any cheaper. I have known many a independent that dead head back rather than haul cheap freight. It makes the brokers think twice about there profit they make off the truck. Because like Brickman said they try to get it moved for what they think they can instead of what it pays and then take a reasonable profit.

:biggrin_2556:Whats to keep a new driver with his own truck from checking out the load boards and picking the loads he wants ? I'm sure it can't be that simple.
