I have a Volvo with almost 1 million miles (volvo d12 engine). Truck runs just fine no problems. My question, is there a bench mark in terms of mileage that an engine should be rebuilt? What is the general mile mark that an engine should be rebuilt? Thanks in advance.

My d12 has 1.2 million on it. I would say as long as oil samples come back good and has good oil psi and not using oil excessively keep running it.

I agree with Jason. I have customers that rebuild just because they hit a certain mileage when you should be looking at how the engine is performing. Pull a sample. If brass is high, then look at rebuilding. If iron is high, do bearing roll in, especially if oil pressure is low. If aluminum is high, look at pistons. If all is high, full rebuild.

Oh, hours are more important than miles. You can have a million miles with 1.2 million hours and be good. Truck next to you could be million miles and have 3 million hours and need rebuild. It really depends on how you run that engine. :)

When to overhaul or not, that is the question. And no one has a definitive answer, if they do they are bull----ing you. That said, this is what I did:

The truck in the little picture above had about a million miles on it, oil analysis was clean, I was the only owner driver, so I knew the history. Detroit Diesel said if you want a warranty on the overhaul it has to be done before a million miles, otherwise, no warranty. Soooo. In my previous life, I was an trained auto/truck mechanic. I decided to have a remanufactured engine installed right at the million mile mark. $25K out the door instead of $18 K, but new clutch, other reman/new accesories made it competitive. BEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE IN MY 35 YEARS TRUCKING, and most profitable.

The biggest question is Do you want to do this sort of thing on your schedule in the shop of your choice, or chance a breakdown in god knows where, and are towed in to a strange shop, strange people and stranger prices.
