Had a cargo van load I was trying to get covered from ATL to AL. 161 loaded miles. Spoke with over 10 carriers and all the drivers wanted more miles. Didn't even give me a bid. Customer was willing to pay.

Two problems here. Drivers not thinking like business people (I need $X to get to where I want.) and companies paying these guys mileage and not willing to offer up the kind of extra money to get them to move because it would send the wrong message (You can't let drivers start bidding on stuff. - More than one carrier has told me that).

This could have been a nice Christmas present for some cargo or sprinter owner. But most that I talked to will likely drive home for Christmas MT.

I'm thinking o/o's probably thought this load wouldn't be worth much as it only was a 160 mile run. How much was the customer willing to pay though ???

Will it go on a reefer? Already playing businessman with one truck putting together a couple weird stops thru Sunday for my son to take off with tomorrow. Just need to sweep some pallet shrapnel out of my trailer and good to go.

Sorry all, it was a single pallet that would go on a cargo van or sprinter. Could have gotten a great rate for those drivers, marginal for tractor.

And this was my point, don't just assume. Place a bid for what you are willing to do it for. I know for a fact that I had a sprinter that wanted to get to Indy. He could have made more money running this to AL than what an average load to Indy would pay. And just looked and his van is still posted in ATL. Heck, you could have run to AL and back to ATL if a load came up and really killed it.

Weren't any of the carriers you talked to on a % basis with their drivers? Wouldn't that have this eliminated the second problem?

I guess that as far as the first problem goes it depends on what kind of carrier you are talking to.

I have taken loads like this with not a second thought. It does help when the broker posts the rate along with the miles and delivery times so a carrier can make a more informed decision if they are simply cruising through the load boards. I always pay attention to the short mile runs if the rate is appropriate.
