I am having the aerofficient side skirt put on on thursday. They are doing the install at Livonia MI. They claim 7-11% fuel savings which I really truly believe. I have used the cheap ones that don't extend all the way to the trailer axles and also do not hang very low to the ground and saw a consistent 4-5% fuel savings. The cost is roughly double what the cheap ones are.

 

I've noticed some Landstar trailers have a aero device in front of the tandems and no skirts, is this a better way to go?

 

You would have to submit the design to CARB and have them approve. Any decent manufacturers designs are already approved.

 

Utility Trailer's product is a kevlar skirt that is mounted using spring steel brackets. The brackets allow the skirts to flex to the sides in a high-clearance dock, and the kevlar just abrades a little where it scrapes the ground. That's the best product I've seen yet - my carrier has had a number of different products on the newer trailers for the last 3 years or so.

 

Transtex is one that Great Dane installs at the factory. The dealers will install for about 6hrs labor. My shop just installed one this morning(doing 5 of the older trailers),took 4 1/2 hrs. All you need is a drill and air riveter and a few basic tools.
