What is California CARB compliant ? and How is it Enforced ?

    O.K...I've has several drivers tell me that this is Triggred by the Year of a Truck,or The way a Certain Truck ' LOOKS ' ? ( whatever the Hell that means ? )....

    So what exactly Triggers a Carb Inspection ?....Is at Weigh Stations ?,or by D.O.T. randomly driving doown the road ?

    And what are the Penalties ? If Caught ?

    Please.....Keep it simple.

    On a Personal Note....I LOVE going to California ! ( EXCEPT for ' Donner Pass ! ' )....It Truly is an Amazing State !....It covers almost Every Eco-System there is !

    YES....I know you guys on the Right DON'T like California ! .:biggrin_25510:....So spare me the Insults ! ( and the Last time I LOOKED....It's still part of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA ! ).:biggrin_255:

    But coming from an a s s -Backward State like Florida !....I've come to appreciate California's Beauty !

    SO Cal can head for Japan...Nor Cal is planning to hang out with Hawaii...Oregon can come too!

    What is CARB...if only that was a easy answer...Basically the California Air Resources Board is trying to pull all trucks and reefers off the road that have engines older than year 2010 by the year 2020. If you are older than 2010, there is a sliding scale of time to install a DPF filter. Like any other government programs, it is chock full of loop holes, phases, and no clear cut answers. I know how it apples to me...I have a 2005 with a 2004 emissions engine. I have to be "CARB COMPLIANT" Jan 1 this year, meaning that I have to add a DPF filter to my rig...well, since I am a "small fleet" of less than 3 trucks, I can register and get a waiver until 2014. Different years have a different compliance date to retrofit or get out of CA...the newer the engine, the longer you have so it is all based on engine year.

    Also 53' trailers have to be equipped with skirts and low rolling resistant tires.

    They will be enforcing this at random CARB inspections at scale houses...This will be CARB staff at random locations at random times. I seriously doubt that CHP will be wanting to, or equipped to inspect for compliance. What that enforcement is has yet to be seen and what a violation will mean. CA carriers will probably end up getting the most screwed as sooner or later, they will tie in CARB compliance proof with registration renewal.

    As of 1/1/2013, all trucks and trailers that operate in CA must have the so-called 'Eco-Smart' low rolling resistance tires, and trailer skirts. I'm not sure whether DPF is required in the entire state now, or still just at the ports.

    Pre-1994
    No requirements until 2015, then 2010 engine
    1994-1995
    No requirements until 2016, then 2010 engine
    1996-1999
    PM filter from 2012 to 2020, then 2010 engine
    2000-2004
    PM filter from 2013 to 2021, then 2010 engine
    2005-2006
    PM filter from 2014 to 2022, then 2010 engine
    2007-2009
    No requirements until 2023, then 2010 engine
    2010
