As for the day before you mentioned Nevada which lead me to believe you ran Nevada, Utah, WY. Well those are some pretty big pulls in utah and western WY so I wouldn't beat myself up too much for that milage. I know that is where my milage droped to 3.7mpg heading out there. Plus it seems you are loaed to the gills with this load.

a good thing to know

[quote=broncrider;175161]the numbers i have posted concerning my loads are whats paid to the truck total.....after davis's cut i beleive....ill hafta double check when i get home next friday, but ill get on an let you know for sure

I'd think that would be a very good thing to know...critical in fact, since it has to be in the neighborhood of 20-30% of your gross.

I hope you'll let us know. Thanks again for the excellent and most interesting posts.

grrrrr

well im unloaded here in iowa, waitin on my next load

just got off the phone with a FM and found out that the numbers i am givin is the total that is paid to the company....to get my share id hafta deduct a certian percentage of the mileage pay ( based on what the load is)....FSC and tarp pay are 100% to the truck.
so my numbers dont look as rosy now, but hey....im still making alittle money...lol

ill be back later to check on all you hooligans.....be warned

hooligans eh?

in my case - hooligan is probably accurate - maybe even a compliment - lol.

anyway, thanks for answering my questions about your load pay. like an old politician once said, "a billion here, a billion there; pretty soon you're talkin' real money."

i can' help but wonder though (if what i'm reading from other O/O's is accurate) if what you're making is going to be adequate to sustain a business.

your best load so far pays $1.45 per mi. ( minus company cut) + fsc + tarp pay. according to others on this forum, unless they're making $2.00 per mile, it just isn't worth the effort.

in reading your posts i feel you're obviously of above average intelligence, so i'd be interested in your thoughts as to what your 'break even point' in the way of cents per mile is.

dont you tell me how broke i am

new load...picks up in chicago tommorrow and delievers in salt lake tues
42008 lbs of steel pipe
1401 total loaded miles # $1.65 = $2311.65
my cut = $1849.32
FSC # $.33 = $462.33
tarp pay # $35
extra stop pay # $50
so my total gross on this one is......drum roll please....$2396.65
now i figure fuel ( with D/H miles figured in) to cost me about...274 gallons x $2.85 a gallon=$781.33
a whoppin total of $1615.32 gross in my account, add in the load i delievered today and ill have a payday of about $2300
also figure in that all of my loads to date have been lumber...they pay crap...i think they are making me reprove myself to them...lol

now believe me you dont hafta tell me how much these guys are making off me runnin thier loads....but i think its better than a broker plus they do all permits, insureance cards, plates, ifta taxes and that sort of thing for me.

i figured my break even point at $1.15 per mile when i thought i was only gonna average 5 mpg....not the 6.5 i am gettin...so its probally lower than that
that figures in my maintence, driver pay, fuel, tire fund, insureance, plates and payment....just no profit

i can get away with the pay i am making BECUASE i am not making $2500 a month truck payment's, mine are alot lower becuase i bought a GOOD used truck for a great price.

i dont know why everyone says you need $2/mile/min.....a buddy of mine who is making those big payments i was talkin about, is making his payments just fine also...and he wont run as hard as i do ( he has a nice little route thing goin.....ny to chicago and back twice a week) and he takes 3 day weekends every week...so no i dont think $2/mile is nessacery to make it, but a willings to make it work is. dont get me wrong...that kinda scratch would be nice but you'll never find it on the west coast, well maybe you could but i dought it would be consistant

think of it this way....at landstar you get 73.5% of the gross.....here at davis i get 80%( some loads at 92%)....beielve it or not it comes out close when you compare like loads....trust me i looked at it

meet up with me one day an ill let you read my lease agreement, i think i made a good choice all together, some things are worth more than money to me

im sorry if this came off as defenceive...i didnt mean it to...but im hot and tired with just a touch of crabbyness thrown in
its my sons 6th birthday today, so im missing that and i missed the baby's birthday two weeks ago...after four months of sitting around playing with them, its kinda odd to be gone and miss so much
but my wife and i still think this is the right thing to do for all of our futures so i have no real regrets....i just miss bein dad...ya know?

Out look

I've been reading your post like every one else. And i agree you don't need 2.00 to make it now but you will have to replace the truck and the trailer at some point. so if your not putting extra away for that over and above the rest then it comes down to a question of do i replace what i have or go back to company driver that is where the 2.00 comes in. I know every load can't pay that and like i have said in other post i figured a rough estimate the other day and it would take about 1.25 for me to break even if i had about a 1500 dollar a month trucm and trailer payment. Which i would have even if the truck and trailer were paid for because then it turns into replacement money. Just something to look at when you figure your bottom line allways figure replacement cost.

I'm not out but I am planning on getting back out there as soon as I can. I have been researching and learning from all on here and 4 other forums. Taking the good and throwing out the bad as I can best determine.

I have came up with a estimated amount that it will cost me to run a truck based on the information I have learn here. In those numbers, I have it set up just for that. Basicly my plan is to build a fleet, so when if my health continues to go down, and if it comes down to I no longer can drive, I'll still have a Job. So I have in my plans to buy more than one truck, and it will come out of that extra taken out per trip. Little by little I'll have the money to buy another, then it will speed up as I save and build. I have a goal of at least 30 truck fleet if not more. It maybe crazy, but that's my goal.

I didn't think you came off as defensive; you came off as honest, and I certainly appreciate the info. I'm thinking of going the O/O route, which frankly scares the hell out of me, and your input has been very helpful.

Obviously there is more to the equation than "how much per mile," (I've sort of decided "how much per day" is a more realistic way to judge. i.e. - a 300 mi. load is going to take all day, so you're going to have to get a lot more per mi. for that than a 1500 mile load that takes two days.) Furthermore, it almost appears to me that when one factors in taxes, depreciation, maintainence, yadda yadda, it matters little what the cost of the rig is. In the long run, from what I can tell, new will cost close to the same as used. Of course I may be wrong (been known to happen) but that's why I'm here -asking lots of questions.

As to the part about the company wanting to "reprove" yourself, I suspect there's probably a fine line between them thinking you are a stand-up guy who will "take a hit for the cause" once in a while - and them thinking you're a doormat who will take any crap they lay on you. Just something to think about - like you don't have enough on your plate now. lol

Anyhow, thanks again and I hope you get to spend some time with the family soon.
