I retire from the Marines in 3 years an about 9 months give or take a few. I am looking at getting my Class A as soon as I can. The next class date is in the fall. Truck schools here in eastern N.C. leave me with a choice of 1 at a CC so that leaves me plenty of time to gather info. I can already tell that Ins. is going to suck. The there is alot of logging going on in my area, would that be a good start. I so how would you get into it. I could get a truck now while I have a steady pay check comming in and try to haul logs on the side, by doing that part time could it pay for the truck and Ins. I do have a good contact that is a big truck mech. who would assist in repairs as well as look over prospect trucks. Any thoughts and advice would be awsome. I have been working part time as a Police Officer for the past 7 years, but I am not sure if I would like to be doing that full time when I retire I am getting tired of the dramma (Marine) (Cop) .

Thank you for your service to our country.
But I hate to bust your dream, without around 2 yrs experience you will have a hard time getting insurance. IF you can it will be very expensive until you get to that "magical" 2 yrs. Some companies even require 5 yrs experience because they get a much better rate on insurance. -
Thanks for the reply Brickman! Just as a round about figure, how much would Ins. run for a 0 exp. driver.
-
ghostrider747, I'll echo Brickmans Thanks for your Service.
And I'll also say the same about getting some experience first, it'll help you in the long run.
I've driven for 4 years, but I had at least a 7 year break, so before I go into an O/O I'm planning on or going to try get back on with a company for least a year. to have current experience.
I can not tell you the cost my self but hopefully someone will come along and answer that one, I'm curious also.
Good Luck in your venture. -
With 0 exp I don't think you could find it at any price.
-
Go get your experience as a company driver for one of the larger outfits, i.e. Schneider, Werner, Willis Shaw, and basically ANYONE BUT SWIFT!!!!!!!
Still do your research, work out a Business Plan, SAVE some cash. And before you know it, you'll have the experience you need ( maybe ) to bump it up to the next level.
Good Luck,
CBT -
I have read where some 0 experience newbie starting O/O right off did find it, but they did have to search hard to find one that would allow them to go past a certain miles radius. If I find the post, I'll post more information for you. I do remember it was expensive. Prograssive(sp) I think will insure you, but limits you to a 300 mile radius if no experense. -
Thanks for the info. For now if I get my Class A I am not looking to drive over a 300 mile radius. I need to keep it local because I am still on active duty. Thats why I was looking at hauling logs.

You can do good hauling logs but you gota hump. My wifes uncle ownes a good sized logging co in east TX and basicly everyone in the family ownes a logging truck they lease to him.
