Going to go through books but assuming in a truck i,m considering selling i average 90cpm after fuel and fixed expences with me as the driver
If i hired a driver assuming mpg will drop so subtracting 5cpm from net and assuming maint will go from 15 cpm to 20 cpm would 45 cpm be a fair rate to get an experienced driver with weekly hometime and driver picking outbound loads from available freight....are my assumptions inline to what others experienced from employed drivers ....and that rate would be on a w2 so would cost me around 48 cpm

    So. 90 - 73 would leave .17 cpm am i missing something
Can i just use an occ acc policy for said driver or do i needto get workmns comp in ks and whats the cost if anyone has that avg

I have not done this for a few years but it used to cost about 25% add on for driver wages, so to pay .45 cpm will cost you .55 -.60 biggest ding was workmans comp that mite be a little cheaper in Kansas.

like I said maybe workcomp is cheaper in KS don't forget unemployment ins. having employees is a major pita that is the real reason so many fleece-purchase deals are available

You looked into OOIDA yet? They are good in some areas. Also, insurances are a big line item. Workers comp alone is around $500/month. Plus the human factor - will the hired hand take care of your equipment? Be on time? I'm in the about-to-hire place myself, and all these items are important, but really, from what I've learned to date, if you get a good, responsible driver your chances for success are a lot better. If you hire some hoser who's not responsible or careful, could hurt your future. Best in all you do.

I agree, this is the best way to set up pay for someone else to drive your truck for you plus add a deduction from their pay for their WC Insurance. Simplify it so they can keep track of their pay as well.

I'd stay away from paying mileage. You know how some loads pay more or less than others. This guy/gal could be picking their own freight and not really know what they are doing. If they don't hit your break-even mileage amount, you can be stuck holding a leaking bag. In line with percentage, the nice thing with that is you don't necessarily have to start out at 50%. There's nothing wrong with starting at 30% and letting him or her work their trust level up to a higher percentage. After all, it is your company and equipment, why should an employee be getting half of your company?
