No, basically, what I was sugggesting was. It appears from what I have read , that an experienced driver can get insurance to go otr with his own authority, and simply add an inexperienced guy onto the policy, who could then drive the truck solo.

This allows, for someone to do a deal with an experienced guy, to do all the paperwork in his name. Even if he never set foot in " his " truck.

For an new cdl holder, to get his own authority to go otr, the insurance, if he could even get it, would cost $25,000 plus.

For a guy with a clean cdl and 10 years of experience this same policy would be $10,000 or even less.

Anyway..........I'm sure it would not be as easy as all that ......but from what I have read here........???

I agree MM. While the possibility lies that this 2nd seat driver could run solo, I am certain that if it where to end in an accident the insurance company would find cause and bail. As you where taught is my intention of teaching my brother. Knowing he is a quick study do I think it will take 2 years for him to learn and know enough to be safe and successful, no. I think he could be ready in 15 months or so, but I am speculating as I have yet to see his behavior and actions in an 18 wheeler. I have also made it very clear to him that if I am uncomfortable with his actions the deal is off and I will continue solo. If this works and I survive the stress of training a rookie I hope to maybe repeat this again in 8 years when my son is 21.

Irishman, after re-reading your post I kind of gathered it to be a facetious remark. While in theory of what has been relayed here it does sound possible but I am not the insurance man and was just relaying the lam-ens terms of the ordeal I had to go through to get my brother approved for training under my authority and insurance.

my suggestions:

get your DOT physical done

do the paper tests for your class A CDL permit

ride around with your buddy for a few weeks, hopefully he will let you drive to gain some experiance and maybe alittle backing

get a DOT inspection done on the truck, and repair everything they tell you needs it, within reason of course

pass the cdl drive test, hopefully in your friends truck, as it is already liceanced and insured, and should pass a DOT inspection

then with cdl in hand, and a tractor of your own to run.....Lease it onto an outfit, reputable of course, and learn the ropes of trucking before you go all out, you can get base plates and insurance THRU the company, at a many times cheaper rate

most outfits that lease o/o's have no minimum requirment for how many days you have to be out or how many days you have to run in a year...so you'd still be your own boss just dispacthed by someone else, and have the added benifit of having thier repair network at a phone call

Yes.....it was a tounge in cheek remark at the time. But, it has now got me thinking. If I thought I could do this and it would be still legal, it would be an option for me.

I understand that a new guy might be able to find someone to lease his truck on to. Therefore using their insurance. Although, the number of companies, that will take a new cdl driver under his own authority has to be minimal.

if you lease on to a carrier you will not, legaly, be able to run your own authority, instead you would run there DOT #'s and mc #'s

Are there many outfits out there that would take a new cdl driver, with his own truck ?

If so, I assume it would make a difference if the truck was fairly new.

Would there be a greater, or lessor, number of outfits, if a fella wanted to operate with a reefer.?

I hear ya on that specially for a start up. I actually tried to do that with my brother but due to his history (he got a DUI when he was 20 and didn't pull over right away so they hit him with felony flee to allude, he is 29 now) as he has done his time and most companies say after 3 or 5 years it has haunted him. He is my brother and I am in a position to help so I am doing what I can. My insurance has gone up but in the end I think it will come back to benefit the both of us.
