can anyone help me with this question? I 'm getting my authority. I read previous posts here and I followed the instructions, so I got my DOT # and my MC# I talked to the FMCSA and I was told to get insurance coverage which I have lined up already. They , FMCSA, also stated that I have to have designation of agents. Now, I asked a friend who has his own authority, he said that he never used Agents. My question is ..... can I do it myself? my running radius is only 300 miles basically is local. Are those agents indispensable?
    Thank you x your time.

Join the OOIDA, then call their business services, they will file your BOC 3 for free. That's the easy way around that problem.

For a $35 one time fee, it is far easier to go through a process agent. The process agent simply has an attorney in every state - should you ever be involved in an accident or claim in a state other than your own. The party bringing the action will notify the attorney in that state who will then notify you of the impending claim.

Oscar - thanks, I wasnt aware you could do it yourself.

I don't even think it has to be an attorney. I believe it can be anyone with a street address in the state that can accept certified mail and love notes from the sheriff on your behalf.

Fun fact: On the BOC3 from OOIDA the Missouri agent is a person in their office there in Grain Valley. I have MO authority and have received forwarded notices from MoDOT via their process person.

Is designation of agents for your authority different from processing agent for your business? They do the same thing. Why can't they just be the same name and not confuse people?

On the webpage of the FMCSA they give a list of process agents for each of the states. Do I fill up the form with those agents?

We have enough to keep track of in this business as is. Utilize OOIDA for this; it's CHEAP and takes the headache out of it 100% You don't want to be bothered keeping track of this. Concentrate your energy and time on building the BUSINESS.
