I figured I would start another thread as I am weighing in some options for what exactly I want to do. I am thinking about becoming a teamster and making $75 a hour hauling asphalt. Has anyone do this or used to do this? What could be some pros & cons on this? I do realize its a pain in the rear trying to keep the truck/trailer clean. I live in Iowa and I could not work year around with the asphalt crews. I figured either I could save up money during the year or buy a skateboard and do some Chicago runs. I would appericate any info I can get on this.

    iowabmw,

    Hi ... And welcome... Aboard...

I still do this with a friend of mine.... He is using a KW-T800 (B) truck to haul pave.

I pave, he paves and the day driver does what we call PLANT hauls.
Yes its good money but you have to bust ##### to do what you sayed. SAVE for winter.... That's the hard part. I myself have trucks that I run STEEL with and about to start pulling a BULK concrete tank for a local construction company.

The asphalt is GOOD moneys when you work the truck 24/7 and that's if your planning on taking the winter off. I could actually give you this man's Company Name and number if you would like to discuss the O/O's place in asphalt hauling 1 on 1 with him.

    As far as clean out?
keep it CLEAN from the START.
before you go into the SILO to load your 24 - 25 TON plan on adding laundry detergent to your BED so that the hot rock melts the SOAP and will SLIDE out while in the paver. This will also grant you a CLEAN bed at the end of the night and you'll not have to use alot of diesel on your final drop and on CLEAN out.

I hope I could be of help to yah.... And I myself would do it. I have a truck as we speak I am searching deal's on WETLINES for. I am planning on adding another truck to our fleet aswell.

All the best in your ventures.....
Lemmi know if you would like to SPEAK to this O/O who is doing what you are thinking about getting into. He can give you more advice on this VENTURE than I. ( Im ) a FLATBEDDER who haul's HOTROCK for the FUN and just to help out my friend!

(GOOD) drivers you can trust are HARD to find, so that's why WE are working together. I trust him in MY trucks and HE trust's ME.....

    Good luck my brother,
    Matthew

    HOWDY to ALL.... LTNS!

Depend's on your preference of trucks too. Wrong choice of trucks can make or break you. For example:4-5 Axle Trucks are LEGAL at I want to say 18 TON. 6-7 Axle 21 Ton. ( Those are CLASS B ) trucks.

No matter here in Ohio you can plate a class B truck with an 80,000 Gross plate but only legally haul MAX of 21-22 Ton.

Reason being it the length of the straight trucks. ( BRIDGE law ) stops the class B trucks from hauling anymore than 22 ton.

SEMI's on the other hand: 80,000 LIMIT.
With a nice little day cab or even a smaller Road tractor you are able to get a nice light weight that will enable YOU to load 25 - 26 MAYBE pushing it 27 ton. ( LEGAL )

So, my point being.... The right Combo in SEMI / Trailer will allow you to haul more money.... PLUS the advantage is in the WINTER when asphalt is done....... You are able to PULL trailer's to help you through the winter months. Or possible to talk to your local gravel yard or asphalt plants to see if you are able to do what's called STOCK HAULing.

The plants will need stocked for winter so that when springtime comes the plants are able to go into operation.

Im not trying to be a know it all, but I have hauled ( dump ) for 7 years... among my career.. So I do know a little of that game...

I will also tell you this.... If you KNOW someone who DOES haul hotrock or STOCK to plants... I would reccomend riding with them for a DAY... Just to See what it's like.

My average asphalt hauling night the ( B ) truck will make: $400.00
Average Miles for that 400 is around 150

A good night the trucks will make 500.00 - 700.00 Per night.
And still only burn a 1/2 tank of fuel. This is NO lie.

But it's all a gamble and their are a @$**load of drivers doing it.... That's the only risk.

You just getting into the GAME, the plant's will stick you at the TAIL of the list... But ( WILL ) call you for work but you will have to be the Rookie for the first year or 2. But I myself.. Amd a gambling man... And WOULD give it a shot...

I can even help you a little from here... Just tell me Where and What state you are in and I will help you put the cart before the horse and will get you a LIST of LOCAL asphalt and Aggregate yards in your area.

    All the best of luck,
    Matthews

I live in Davenport, IA (Quad Cities) and I have heard if you want to haul asphalt you have to be a teamster here. They get paid by the hour around here ($75). I did talk to a union rep and he says that the wages can be negotiable depending on how much I can haul. I do know I want to drive combiation (Class A) either day cab or short flat top sleeper.

(NICE) I was hoping with Fingers Crossed you would say Davenport....
Let me see what stuff I can DIG up for you... On Aggregate / Concrete / asphalt , exc..... For you...
My advice is alike yours. I Prefer a FLAT TOP... Reason being is you never know WHEN you'll have to take your truck to the breezeway... (WINTERTIME)

Call Mr Thomas.... He can help guide you...
