Hi folks. A nearby company is offering O/O .95/ mile. For the life of me I can't figure out how to squeeze a living out of this rate. What am I missing? Thanks!

Check if it pays the same empty or loaded. Some logistics pay 0/0 the same per mile for all dispatched miles. Unless it's changed, Cardinal Logistics pays that way. I know a couple dozen 0/0's working there and they make real good money on payday. It's been a long time, maybe 5 or 6 years since I've talked to any of them, but many have been there 10 or 15 years or so. They also get a FSC.

For example, they haul a load from Charleston, SC to Jacksonville, FL and the load planners can't have a backhaul waiting, then they would return to Charleston, SC deadhead and it pays the same both ways. I can't vouch that it's still the same now though.

at 95 cents a mile what you are missing is money, but if they are paying loaded and mt miles, give you 100% of the fuel charge, pay base plate, use there trl, insurance, and dispatch and paper work. if your truck payment is low you could make a living, providing you are not making payments on a boat, corvette, cad. escalade for the wife, a new harley, and have five kids with two in collage. its really tough out there now to make a living in trucking. lots of luck

Those cpm contracts are usually all miles(computer miles so accuracy depends on what routing software they use). Plus a fsc of 40 cpm or so. You end up with somewhere at 1.30 to 1.35 on computer miles. Some guys swear they make good money at that rate, but I don't know how when it cost #### near a buck a mile to operate a truck.

taking all that into account, after paying the cost to operate a truck, almost every company driver earns more per mile.

Edit to add: it's not any harder or easier to make money in trucking today than anytime in the last 15 years. All ya gotta do is get the right type of freight and get away from the mega carrier 90 cent a mile crowd.

By my calculation about $1.45 a mile is what's missing. I like to average around $2.50 a mile give or take. Also like to keep a little of what I earn, have the ability to replace equipment if necessary, take a little time off without sweating it, not have to grind on week after week, not have to drive more than 1500 miles a week making decent money, if I don't want to drive more than that. Having worked for 95 cents a mile plus surcharge before I can tell you firsthand that a LOT is missing and you are pissing away good equipment making someone else rich and struggling yourself. Sound like fun?

    you actually make about $1.20/mi

heavy loads will cost about 70cpm in fuel alone

lets not add hills and wind and idling

As a Broker in 1996, I was paying my O/O, pulling my trailer, .95 cpm when fuel was .99/gal. You can not make a profit, let alone, cover your expenses at that rate.
