What do you want to pull? Flatbed, van, reefer, heavy. What kind of truck depends on the application.

Just to add to the ?'s above Get 1 that does the job and you can afford and do not worry about the EWWS and AHHS when you pull into the truck stop

What he said. Depending on the work at hand, and the way you drive determines the best truck. Then of course every body has their opinion.

Personally I would look for a pre EGR truck. Far more reliable then trucks made after that. Then specs , what works great for one app may stink in others. Had a fleet from 86 that was perfect for their job (made just for the contract) , they got over 10 MPG . But would not work correctly on what I do now. So it's important to know what the truck will be doing!
If a newer truck is "needed" buy one that has DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) on it. Cured a lot of the issues from EGR and EGR + DPF trucks (2004 thru 2010) . DEF , you need to keep its tank as full as you can. As DEF dries it forms a crystal . These crystals stop up the plumbing . If the tank gets low , the fluid may splash up on the upper part of the tank once or twice a day. Then dry forming these crystals . Then wash off the inside of the tank next fill up , causing issues.
Next is glider kits. You get a remaned engine without the emissions headaches and a new cab and chassis . Almost best of both worlds!
All that said the company I work for , has many different specked trucks. That run on different fuel types even. Depending on job required and location. Hope this helps some ?
