why not lease somewhere first to get your feet wet before getting authority?

That would probably be the smart, maybe not smart but the easiest way to do it. Less risk that way but less reward too. I have done a quite a bit of research and I think running under my own authority is the way to go..Leasing onto a company you are really at their mercy. If a load pays crap you get paid crap and not a whole lot you can do about it. Every company is different..some offer /mile and some % and some you can choose your own loads and negotiate some you cant..if I'm gonna get my feet wet anyways might as well take the plunge right? At least I control my own destiny. Just want to make sure I get all my numbers as close to accurate as possible before I do. Not sure if a lot of drivers go from 3 years company driver straight into running under own authority. But i am determined to do it and do it successfully. When I started driving I would have never thought I would even consider doing this.

yeah it would be the smart thing to do, you haven't really researched companies to lease to , I can tell that by your reply. several companies allow you to completely choose your own loads. mercer and landstar are two in this category.

and there can be just as much reward in a good lease than running your own authority.

going from company , straight to own authority will be a tough one, not impossible but tough

I'm in the same boat as you. Schneider choice, Mercer & Landstar are out due to mandatory e-logs & their hefty cut.

Like I said some do..some don't..I hear a lot of mixed feelings toward mercer landstar..doesn't hurt to keep an eye out for a company to lease on to...smart thing to do for some people..but that's really not what I was trying to get into on this thread..so many threads about it already..so many opinions..really just looking for numbers..thanks for the advice

That's the bad thing about signing on with a company...everyone getting their slice of the pie..not much left by the time it makes it to you

Those numbers all seem about right give or take a few like tolls in northeast. One very big item I didnt see on there is health insurance which can vary a lot depending on if your single or family and where your located. Overall it comes out to about roughly the same ball park operating costs of $1.40/mile when you figure in everything.

Fuel here in NY right now is $4.19/gallon average at the pump. At what he said based on 120000 miles a year at say 6mpg youll burn 20000 gallons.
