I had authority for about 15 years, when you figure all the costs of insurance , drug consortium, cargo ins. broker fees, etc etc etc., 3 per cent factor fees, that 25 per cent becomes very small. , many go into getting authority looking at that 25 per cent and thinking they will get most of it, far from it.

the fact is its not that great of a difference, with a good lease you can do just as well without many of the headaches, especially if you have no experience at all being a owner /op.

not saying its impossible, just not the gravy train many imagine having your authority is, its a heckuva lot of work.

the biggest problem is many guys coming to mercer or landstar have zero experience at picking their own loads, there is a learning curve. that's the biggest problem many guys don't look at where the load goes they look only at rate and end up in bad areas,

sometime a 2.15 a mile a load to the truck is way better than a 2.50 a mile load to the truck, the trick is knowing why that is so.

Thanks..yes I absolutely wouldn't even consider doing this without $100k before purchasing truck/trailer...going to get a loan for half that amount to add to the other half i have. You are right I probably could make more hauling something else, but I'm going to stick with what I know for now..have only ran van/reefer.

Yes I will be running load boards to start and working on getting loads from shippers directly. Sounds like nastc has a pretty good fuel card, as far as discounted, that I am going to use. And 6 mpg I am figuring on the low side. I'd rather be heavy on my expenses and light on my income, as far as planning..

Motor carrier authority has become 'cliche' sort of speak.......
Its too easy to get these days, Any tom,#### or Harry Can apply and with insurance in place, Wola! Heres your Authority!

See, too many Folks dont have the Business understanding to become a Motor Carrier.........

"I'll just work for Brokers"...Or 'let Me try this"

leasing on to an existing carrier is fine....for those that dont want any responsibilty other than maintaining their own truck/trailer...Even Then..Most of these Carriers DEMAND you use their Shops for annual inspections and such.

Leasing on and Being a Motor Carrier are 2 Completely separate entities...Nothing about the 2 are alike.

me Personally..Could Never lease my equipment on to anyone,Ever! No Matter what.
    Why?

Its More than just about the money..(I cant stress that any harder)...Its More than just the Money.
I enjoy being a Motor Carrier Because of the relationships I Built over the Years with customers here in chicago.......
Knowing I have a pool of Customers that I sweat Blood for is More Rewarding than money can buy

Leasing your equipoment on with a carrier simply strengthens THEIR customer Pool..Not yours, THEIRS! That would get under my skin quickly

Leasing on allows the carrier (With their name on your truck) to operate you in a fashion of Control..(Yes,I understand you guys can pick n choose whatever Loads you want..Or Not work,or whatever.)
..But in the Long Run....Is this carrier 100% Truthful with you on Rates??

Think about it Slowly before you reply...Is the carrier you are leasing on with 100% Truthful to you about rates??

I know the answer...But I dont want to hurt anyones feelings........

That's another thing to figure out is ifta..I though I was getting it figured out a little bit, but I guess not..so I should be figuring my fuel cost at around $3.19/gal even if I pay say $3.80 at the pump? And you are right, I should account for maybe running only 50 weeks a year, which I think I did when I came up with the 80k..11k x 50 weeks..but anyways....thanks for your reply

I hear ya. I do believe it is a lot of work and is not "gravy train". Im sure there will be more work then I feel like doing sometimes and there will be a ton of things I will have to learn. And I do under stand you don't want to take a load to a dead area unless you are making not a good, but exceptional rate where you can afford to deadhead to area with a good freight to truck ratio. If you need $2/mi on every mile, you probablly couldnt do it for less tham $4/mi depending..And I will have to wait up to 90 days to get paid by some brokers. And I am able to move my wife and kid to anywhere USA where the freight is good. Not sure exactly where that is of now, but have been narrowing that down too. Also, if you can wait on the money to come in, is it worth factoring loads? Is pay more guaranteed? Thanks

    stayinback,

you must also worry yourself over whether the broker is taking to much of a cut also, if ya worry that much about the motor carrier being truthful.

I frankly could give a rats behind what anyone else gets, I concentrate on what the truck ends up with. if I accept the rate on the load, then I am happy and never look back or woory if someone got an extra dime.

like I said , I have been on boths ends of the stick, there is much more to leasing on to a carrier and being successful than just maintain a truck and trailer.

you are still running a business and the exact same principles for success apply.

I been there , got the t-shirt and got screwed , blued and tattooed. its take a bit of skill either way, even more so if ya never been an owner before
