I'm going to go from a company OTR driver to running my own Tri axle dump truck out of the local quarries. I will be mainly running within NJ. I assume I need to set the company up as an LLC to protect myself , what other steps do I need to take to get going. I know I need good insurance, but do I need DOT numbers, fuel tax permits or anything else ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    Don

I am also considering doing this and I can offer some advice. First of all you will need DOT numbers the whole nine yards. If you are going to have your own authority you will need approx $1000 for your DOT, ICC etc. Here in IA the INTRASTATE permit is around $1000 , insurance runs about $6000 truck/trailer. You will have to have the same stuff a OTR truck has to have/pay. The only difference is the permits, you only need a permit for the state you are going to operate in. Hope my little info can help and be prepared for other O/Os in here to advise you to drive for someone else before buying your truck. Let me know what you find out because I am seriously debating doing this.

That's what I thought I needed, pretty much. I need more hometime than the OTR co's can give me.

I would also go by the local quarries in early am and talk to the drivers and the managment. They will be your best source of info. Ask them what kind of equiptment you will be able to make the most money/loads with(trk w/dump trl, quad axle, tri axle, ect.). They will also be able to point you in the right direction to get a good deal on used equipment!

I call a couple quarriers yesterday & the one just got a big paving contract repaving the interstate along a 8 mile stretch. I found a great truck , with only 172,000 miles aluminum heated body, wheels etc. The truck is in great condition & was owned by a local excavating co. I'm going out today to talk to some drivers about permits etc. Also , I'm going to use a local lawyer to do the LLC work. Everyone running around here is using a tri axle dump & think mainly because they also do snow plowing for the state in the winter. The guy I'm getting the truck from is going to set me up with the snow plowing gig for winter & I can also haul loads of salt for the quarry all winter.
