the rebuild/glider kit companies get 8 mpg out of a 2001 or older truck? If I buy a pre-EPA/pre-EGR truck, what is the least work I will need to do to make it reliable and 8 mpg for long distance, coast-to-coast running? (sorry I lied, that's 3 questions!)

Rebuild everything! If you buy a glider you must pay taxes on a new truck. You can't get 8 MPG out of a 379 with a 500 CAT, so that's not the answer. Avg on mine @ 32 K was 6.8 to 7.2 Sea -BALT

Don't buy anything aver a 03. after that there all junk. because of the EPA. Look for smoke from the stacks.(white or black). oil in the radiator or water in the oil. But most trucks will be clean up and fluids change. watch for soot from the stacks at start up. Buy a scan guage D. you can plug it into the truck and get fault codes, MPG, Mileage ect. Get the vin and do a truck search to see if it was in a accident and who and how many owners. If there isn't any receipts to show repairs, it kind of hoping you made the rite chose and see what happens. Try Damiron.com I bout a truck thew them. good trucks, Good people and a fair deal. Good Luck

That is probably the scangauge E. You need the Scangauge D ($160) or Scangauge KR ($200)
