im starting my shopping for a new truck. im wondering how much your local truck dealers plays a roll in what brand of truck you buy.

i have a kenworth, peterbult, freightliner, mack and volvo dealers all near by so lots of local parts support for pretty much everything.

my freightliner parts department is good. 99.8 percent of the time they give you the right parts first time and almost always have what you need on hand. there shop i felt raked me over when i had them put a clutch in my truck last year, they close early on Saturday and not open on Sunday.

the kenworth dealer, open Saturday and Sunday. there shop has a bad reputation. but carry a lot of parts on hand

the mack/volvo dealer i have very little experience with

the peterbult dealer pretty much the same as the mack/volvo dealer other than picking up some parts for people.

i will do a bit more looking at the mack, and peterbult dealers as far as there parts department hours and such

this weekend being a holiday weekend i was needing a exhaust elbow for my freightliner i had taken it all apart on the 4th expecting to go get new parts on saturday but they were closed for the entire weekend. ended up across the street at kenworth and they were able to match something up that was close enough to work. then today i dropped my oil punch holes in my filters pull my filters and head over to napa to grab some new filters as i was out at my shop. well apparently napa decided to close for the entire weekend as well. i ended up at kenworth again today for filters.

kind of got me thinking, mabye i should be looking for a kenworth (also check on peterbult and macks parts department hours) for the sake of being able to get make/model specific parts on Sunday's. its always been a bit of a issue with freightliner being closed Sundays as alot of times i come into town late Saturday night after there closed and leave out Sunday night or early Monday morning.

how much value would you place on parts/service department hours of operation of your local dealers on your next truck purchase

i think for me the parts department is more valuable than the service department as i do almost all my own repairs and im looking at older used trucks not looking at newer trucks with factory guarantees still in place.

The weird thing is, I bought my trk. in Mn. and the dealer there has done me good. Heck even their parts dept. Has been good to me. I have called them out on the road when the dealer in the area did not have the part I needed. They shipped it to me. Yea I paid the shipping, but hey they had the parts..
When I do update I will give them first shot on the next trk..

I think for your local operation the parts departments hours and stock on hand is a huge deal. Get to know them and spend a few bucks with them and they can be extremely valuable. I was a service/parts manager in a mid sized GM dealer for several years. I had loyal parts customers that got perks like me or my staff getting them service info, use of some special tools, time talking to a tech etc. because they spent money with us.

all the guys in the parts department at my local freightliner dealer all know me. and take care of me pretty good. the biggest issue is them being closed on Sunday and close early on Saturday. can be a issue when im normally away from home mon-saturday.

then i know that with a holiday being on a Friday if your normally open Saturday you should be open sat., sat. was not a holiday. i know everyone surly wanted a 3 day weekend but to have a truck dealership's parts department closed for 3 days kinda ticked me off. and the fact that the kenworth dealer was open won some points for me.

i forgot we also have a international dealer where i live too. only time iv delt with them in the past was when i was looking for a set of injector o-rings for a 7.3L powerstroke and the ford dealer wanted a arm and a leg for them so i thought i would check the international dealership and they said they don't sell parts for power-strokes, then when i told them its the same motor as the international t-444e they said the injector o-rings would be different.

Besides the trucks, I have all the farm machinery to take care of. My choices are based on parts and service, I think in that order. If I have trouble getting parts, I'm not having any fun, no matter what brand. As I live in the boonies, I count on a parts network that includes UPS delivery that comes the next day, and my trusted NAPA dealership that delivers several times a day. If I need dealer specific parts I want to talk to someone knowledgeable, courteous and accurate. If I can't fix it and I need service, I want a well trained, knowledgeable, courteous actual mechanic person to show up. If I need to take a truck or machine in, I want an accurate time that my piece is going in the bay. Parts and service, brand after. That said I do love John Deere and Peterbilt!

I used to think dealer support was important until I had to depend on them a time or two. You have no doubt already found there's a few gems out there surrounded by mountains of poop. With a new truck, I'd be more worried about the service department and downtime versus parts availability. Even if the parts are on hand, it doesn't matter if your truck is sitting in there for a week waiting for someone to look at it. And then get to do it again when they don't fix it right the first time.

FedEx and UPS offer daily overnight service. It's not a big deal to get parts from somewhere else in a day. However, in addition to cleaning out your wallet, dealer service departments tend to service and care for their national accounts ahead of some guy that just comes in once in a while. The parts order will not be the big factor in turn around time. I'm in the Atlanta area and have dealt with Freightliner and KW. Both have pretty much same day availability on parts. I will hire a tow truck before using any of their service departments, while saving both money and time with that option. To be honest, this is something that keeps me from even considering a new truck and potential warranty service needs. The glossy ads in the truck magazines are never backed up at the service counter where it really counts.

im looking at older used trucks mostly older than 03 but looking at up to 06 so warranty issues are not a concern.

i think iv come to the conclusion that all shops in my area charge way to much for sub standard work. good luck finding a labor rate under 100 bucks an hour, and normally takes them longer than it should and don't do as good of a job as they should. but that's why i have my own shop now...lol

Amen on this. My truck is still under warranty. 1 week delay at Peterbilt to even get it looked at. It's generally 3 or 4 days but they were extremely busy. Doesn't do a whole lot of good to have a warranty that will cover that $500 repair when you lose $5000 in revenue. I'm glad I anticipated the wait and got my boat ready to go do a few days of fishing!

To the OP, I'd definitely look hard at parts availability. Being able to get a part on the weekend is very important if you don't want to lose a day running during the week.

OOIDA advertises that members who buy new trucks (and used also I think) from Rush or MHC can get bumped to the front of the work order line by mentioning you are a member. Have often wondered if it really worked or would just get a blank stare or excuses in the real world.
